Job Summary:

The Behavioral Health Technician Shift Supervisor provides oversight, training and support for Behavioral Health Techs (BHTs). They collaborate with unit's Operations Supervisor and other clinical staff to oversee a range of operational activities in support of running a safe milieu.

The BHT Shift Supervisor assists in the operations of KMHS in support of its stated mission, and provides the highest level of customer service to internal and external customers. provides the highest level of customer service to internal and external customers.

General Summary of Duties:

Hiring and Supervision

  • Supervise BHTs in their work including but not limited to training, coaching, and evaluating with regard to:
  • Completion of assigned tasks and associated paperwork.
  • The use of trauma informed communication during client interactions.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate documentation in the Electronic Health Record.
  • Professional communication including but not limited to email, telephone and face-to-face interactions with peers and colleagues.
  • Additional tasks as assigned to the BHTs.
  • In collaboration with the Operations Supervisor, provide regular individual and group supervisions with BHTs:
  • Document and keep confidential records of supervisions and other significant interactions (i.e., debriefs, concerns raised or performance related issues).
  • In collaboration with Operations Supervisors, provide ongoing individual training and coaching as needed with regard to specific staff performance, areas of improvement and training goals.
  • In collaboration with unit leadership, participate in interviews for BHTs.
  • In collaboration with Operations Supervisor, complete assigned BHT performance appraisals within agency standards and timelines.
  • Promote the enhancement of positive staff morale by facilitating a timely response to concerns, ensuring respectful and professional internal communications, facilitate team building, and providing opportunities for staff recognition.

Unit and Milieu Staffing:

  • Conduct ongoing assessment of milieu acuity and client risk, collaborating in a timely manner with the Operations Supervisor as needed to ensure effective de-escalation.
  • In collaboration with unit leadership ensure adequate staffing per shift according to the appropriate protocol, to include additional staff as needed. Follow the established protocol for determining additional staffing.
  • Lead unit pass downs, providing any relevant client and milieu information (i.e., safety, administrative) to oncoming BHT Lead.
  • In collaboration with the Operations Supervisor conduct regular chart audits of BHT documentation to ensure compliance with all relevant WACs.
  • Model appropriate techniques/behavior, including:
  • Evidenced-based behavioral interventions on the floor
  • Communication with staff and clients
  • Trauma Informed Care (TIC)
  • Professionalism

  • With unit leadership, participate in the interviewing, selection of, scheduling coaching, and evaluation of direct reports. Collaborate with program leadership in the annual performance review process.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE: Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience or equivalent education in similar field)

LICENSURE: Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, social services, or behavioral health field or equivalent experience in Behavioral Health.

EXPERIENCE: Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)

Inpatient/residential work experience, supervisory experience, and teaching ability.

Relevant experience working with clients with severe and persistent mental illness.

Performance Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Maintain a working knowledge and skill in verbal de-escalation skills as outlined in Pro-ACT/CPI trainings and other agency-mandated trainings.
  • Maintain knowledge of unit policies and procedures and work collaboratively with departmental Leadership.

SKILLS:

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, clients, organizations, and the public.
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS applications preferred.

ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team member

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

Work Environment: Residential treatment facility

Mental/Physical Requirements: While performing the job duties, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, ascend and descend stairs, talk or listen and lift to 50 pounds. Peripheral vision is also required for this position. Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.

  • Ability to maintain audio and visual observation at all times.
  • Ability to stand and be mobile for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, twist, reach, hold and lift as needed to successfully evade and/or participate in protective holds against client weight (40 -250lbs).
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to remain calm and utilize safety training in potentially assaultive client interactions.
  • Ability to move quickly and confidently to assist or intervene when needed in potentially stressful situations.
  • Successful completion of safety training, which includes demonstration of ability to: maintain balance, torso twist, forward bend, pivot, sidestep, forward and backward step, crouch, move to secure limb, knee touch to ground, kneel, get up from floor sitting or kneeling position.
