Bilingual Paraprofessional

Paraprofessional Guidelines

1. Respect and encourage the uniqueness and individual differences of every student.

2. Instill Christian values by word and by example. Treat all members of the community with respect and dignity.

3. Assist students, classroom teachers, school staff, and the parents of ELs by providing bilingual communication support through interpreting and translating data and information that reinforces learning skills introduced by the teacher.

4. Directly communicate with parents and children to convey education and school-related

information to ensure full comprehension. Translate during conferences and other school events.

5. Monitor activities and behavior of children during the presence or absence of classroom

teachers to insure an environment that is safe and conducive to learning.

6. Manage individuals and small groups of ELs separately from, but under the general

guidance, of a classroom teacher.

7. Supervise, provide assistance/support, and monitor progress of students as they complete online Spanish instruction program.

8. Assist teachers in checking and objectively evaluating students'' work/progress.

9. Escort students to and from classrooms as needed.

10. Provide input and assistance in the development of classroom activities and learning

tools.

10. Document records of learning activities and/or tutoring sessions.

11. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and maintenance of EL records.

12. Contact parents regularly and inform them of their child's progress as requested by teachers.

13. Plan and organize enrichment activities which will provide a positive learning experience for all students while developing their Spanish Language acquisition.

14. Work with the school principal, learning specialist, parents and outside agencies when there is a specific student need.

15. Cooperate in curriculum development to meet the needs of students.

16. Prepare orders for needed materials and provide the administrative assistant with the information in a timely fashion.

17. Supervise students as described in the faculty handbook and as required by the school principal.

Communication

1. Help create a professional working atmosphere.

2. Communicate with teachers to provide for curriculum connections as well as information regarding student needs and concerns.

3. Communicate with all parents as necessary and report to the school principal as appropriate. Provide oral and written communication for Spanish speaking families.

4. Translate the narratives of student report cards into Spanish as is necessary to meet the needs of the students' families.

5. Serve as an interpreter when sharing school information with families that speak only Spanish.

6. Translate school documents and communication into the Spanish language as is necessary to full the communication needs of our Spanish speaking families.

Professional Growth

1. Attend and be actively involved in all faculty meetings, level meetings and in-service experiences.

2. Attain the appropriate religion certification, as outlined by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

3. Obtain/Maintain Wisconsin state Teaching certification or follow an approved study plan leading to certification within the specified time frame. The study plan must be filed by January of the first year of hire.

4. Practice reflective thinking in order to promote personal and student academic growth.

Additional Duties

1. Attend professional/committee meetings as scheduled.

2. Attend at least one Home and School parent meeting per year.

3. Attend evening and/or weekend events as required per school calendar - conferences, open houses, music concerts, parent nights, community events, parish events, etc.

4. Actively participate on assigned or chosen committees.

5. Contribute to the safety and security of all members of the school community. See school security protocols and crisis plan.

6. Carefully read and adhere to the procedures, policies, and terms of the St. Gregory the Great Employee Handbook and Staff Handbook.
