The Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center (BSFHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves all of the primary health care needs of families in the heart of North and Central Brooklyn. The Billing Clerk provides administrative and operational support to the billing department, ensuring accurate patient data, organized documentation, and the proper preparation of claims. This role supports the accurate and timely billing of medical, dental, and/or behavioral health services within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The Billing Clerk helps maintain compliance with federal, state, and payer-specific regulations while contributing to efficient revenue cycle operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Review patient encounters to ensure required information is present; identify and flag incomplete or missing data for the biller (no coding responsibilities).
  • Prepare patient charts and supporting documentation for billing.
  • Scan, upload, and maintain accurate documentation within the system.
  • Assist in correcting demographic and insurance information to help resolve claim rejections (no clearinghouse work).
  • Support the review and collection of missing information related to denied claims.
  • Assist with Uniform Data System (UDS) demographic accuracy.
  • Provide documentation in support of internal and external audits (no compliance decision-making responsibilities).
  • Conduct basic calls to verify insurance eligibility or obtain missing information.
  • Communicate with patients by phone to address billing inquiries, explain charges, and provide account support.
  • Run basic reports as directed by management.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records in accordance with departmental standards
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 12 years of administrative or healthcare office experience preferred.
  • No coding experience required.
  • Basic understanding of Medicaid, Medicare, and Managed Care Plans preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Familiarity with Medicaid, Medicare, and Managed Care billing processes.
  • Working knowledge of insurance provider portals, claims tracking tools, and general billing workflows.
  • Proficiency in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and practice management systems.
  • Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to work independently when needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to maintain orderly documentation and record
