Description

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Billing Manager to oversee end-to-end legal billing operations. This role is responsible for ensuring client invoices are prepared accurately, submitted on time, and handled in compliance with client billing guidelines, outside counsel requirements, and internal policies.

This is a leadership role that will manage billing operations across multiple practice groups and offices, support attorneys and finance leadership, supervise billing staff, and help strengthen revenue cycle processes. The right candidate will bring deep law firm billing experience, strong e-billing knowledge, and prior experience in a large firm or AmLaw environment.

What You'll Do

  • Lead legal billing operations across multiple practice groups, attorneys, and offices
  • Manage, mentor, and develop billing coordinators, specialists, or related team members
  • Oversee workload allocation, billing deadlines, staffing needs, and day-to-day team performance
  • Serve as a key billing liaison for partners, attorneys, legal assistants, finance leadership, and internal stakeholders
  • Review billing activity to ensure invoices are accurate, timely, compliant, and aligned with client expectations
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc billing cycles from preparation through submission
  • Monitor compliance with outside counsel guidelines, client-specific billing requirements, matter budgets, and billing arrangements
  • Support complex billing structures, including alternative fee arrangements, blended rates, fee caps, contingency matters, and other nonstandard billing terms
  • Oversee electronic billing submissions through client e-billing platforms and help resolve rejections or submission issues
  • Manage and optimize billing system usage, including Elite 3E or similar legal billing platforms
  • Track WIP, billed and unbilled revenue, accounts receivable aging, realization trends, billing issues, and potential revenue leakage
  • Prepare billing reports, analyze trends, and provide actionable insights to finance leadership and practice group leaders
  • Partner with finance, IT, and operational teams on billing system improvements, upgrades, automation, and process standardization
  • Support client audits, internal audits, documentation requests, and billing-related inquiries
  • Maintain audit-ready billing documentation and help ensure adherence to internal controls
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce write-offs, decrease billing rejections, and strengthen overall revenue cycle performance

What We're Looking For

  • 10 or more years of legal billing experience within a law firm environment
  • Strong AmLaw 200 or large law firm billing experience required
  • 3 or more years of supervisory or billing management experience
  • Strong understanding of legal billing operations, revenue cycle processes, WIP, AR, realization, and client billing compliance
  • Experience managing billing staff, deadlines, workflows, and attorney relationships
  • Proficiency with Elite 3E, Aderant, or similar legal billing systems
  • Experience with e-billing platforms such as Legal Tracker, CounselLink, Serengeti, Tymetrix, EBH, or similar systems
  • Strong knowledge of outside counsel guidelines and client-specific billing requirements
  • Experience handling complex billing arrangements and high-volume billing cycles
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and data analysis
  • Strong reporting, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with attorneys, clients, finance leadership, and billing team members
  • High attention to detail, sound judgment, and ability to work in a fast-paced legal environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive financial and client information

Preferred Background

  • Prior experience in an AmLaw 200 firm or comparable large law firm environment
  • Experience supporting multiple offices or practice groups
  • Experience partnering with finance leadership on process improvement, system upgrades, reporting, and revenue cycle initiatives
  • Familiarity with client audits, billing controls, and audit-ready documentation practices

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Benefits information available during the interview process
  • Leadership role overseeing legal billing operations
  • Opportunity to support multiple practice groups and offices
  • Exposure to attorneys, finance leadership, client billing requirements, and process improvement initiatives
  • Opportunity to help strengthen billing operations, e-billing performance, reporting, and revenue cycle efficiency

Why This Role Stands Out

This is a strong opportunity for an experienced legal billing leader who wants to manage a sophisticated billing function in a large law firm environment. The role offers team leadership, attorney partnership, complex billing oversight, e-billing responsibility, reporting visibility, and the chance to improve processes that directly support firm revenue performance.
