Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist

Duties:

As a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist in Engineering Service, you will provide services that permit the continuous operation and advancement of equipment used for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients within the medical center and outlying community based outpatient clinics. Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain diagnostic, therapeutic, analytical, and other patient related medical equipment and systems.

  • Perform and document repairs and preventive maintenance on medical equipment.

  • Perform maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair Life Critical systems.

  • Serve as a Contracting Officer Technical Representative for service maintenance or repair contracts on equipment.

  • Communicate with vendors for maintenance or repair needs.

  • Follow-up with clinical staff to ensure that maintenance or repair work was performed satisfactorily.

  • Maintain documentation as necessary and resolve difficulties or problems with the Contracting Officer.

  • Identify and prepare orders for parts and materials needed to complete repairs on equipment in a timely manner.

  • Maintain an efficient stock of parts to provide for scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment and conduct rapid repairs on critical equipment.

  • Analyze, isolate, and correct equipment malfunctions and provide recommendations for improvement in functionality and reliability.

  • Write effective, clear, and concise technical and user instructions.

  • To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-09) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain diagnostic, therapeutic, analytical, and other patient related medical equipment and systems.

  • Apply knowledge of electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics, optics, physics, mathematics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology in performing work.

  • Apply comprehensive theoretical and practical trade knowledge of device operating principals such as Standard Circuit Elements, Integrated Circuits, Microprocessor Technology, Analog and Digital Signal Behavior, Video Imaging, Signal Telemetry Relationships, Fluid Dynamics and Electromagnetic, Ionizing, and Acoustical Radiation.

  • Read, interpret, and apply a variety of technical data such as schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, tables, charts, mathematical expressions and formulas, and other service documentation included in the manufacturer's literature to effect repairs.

  • Identify and prepare orders for parts and materials needed to complete repairs on equipment in a timely manner.

  • Maintain an efficient stock of parts to provide for scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment and conduct rapid repairs on critical equipment.

  • Analyze, isolate, and correct equipment malfunctions and provide recommendations for improvement in functionality and reliability.

  • Perform and document repairs and preventive maintenance on medical equipment.

  • Perform maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair Life Critical systems.

  • Utilize a variety of test equipment such as digital multimeters, electrical safety analyzers, defibrillator analyzers, patient simulators, digital oscilloscopes, pulse generators, frequency counters, and LAN analyzers in performing troubleshooting/repair and preventive maintenance activities.

  • Correctly enter data into a computer system (e.g., DHCP AEMS/MERS).

  • Effectively communicate, in person and in writing, with stakeholders.

OR

Education: Applicants may substitute a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, OR three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, OR LL.M., if related, for the experience required for the GS-11 level. The graduate level education must be in a related field and it must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Combination of Education and Experience. Applicants may combine graduate education and experience to qualify at the GS-11 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required graduate education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 36 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-11.

Competency 3 - Ability to analyze, isolate, and correct equipment malfunctions and provide recommendations for improvement in functionality and reliability.

Competency 4 - Ability to effectively communicate in person.

Competency 5 - Ability to effectively communicate in writing.
