Location: 3601, Main Street, Springfield, MA
Institution: UMass Chan Medical School–Baystate/Baystate Health
Department: Department of Healthcare Delivery and Population Sciences
    Position Type: Full-time/Hybrid

Baystate Health and the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School–Baystate are recruiting an experienced Master’s-level Biostatistician to join the growing Department of Healthcare Delivery and Population Sciences. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a dynamic, mission-driven team conducting innovative research that improves health outcomes and advances health equity across diverse populations.

The department provides a highly collegial, interdisciplinary academic environment focused on clinical, epidemiological, and implementation science research. Projects span a wide range of healthcare delivery topics and offer meaningful opportunities for methodological leadership and collaboration.

The Quantitative Methods Core (QMC) provides statistical and data science support across a broad research portfolio, including serving as a Data Coordinating Center for multicenter studies, supporting clinical and pragmatic trials, and conducting research using large administrative and real-world datasets to evaluate healthcare outcomes and policy.

As Western Massachusetts’ only academic medical center and tertiary care provider, Baystate Health has a strong tradition of training healthcare professionals, delivering high-quality care, and advancing medical knowledge. We are committed to continuous learning, innovation, and inclusion—treating every patient, colleague, and community member with dignity and equity. Our organization actively works to increase diverse representation across all levels.

    Position Highlights:

    • Serve as a key member of the Quantitative Methods Core, supporting and leading high-impact research, including clinical and pragmatic trials and Data Coordinating Center activities.
    • Independently consult with investigators on study design, analysis strategies, and interpretation of results.
    • Conduct complex statistical analyses and contribute to grant proposals, manuscripts, and presentations.
    • Work with large, real-world and administrative datasets, including electronic health records, claims, registry, and clinical trial data.
    • Collaborate in a supportive, academically rich environment with a strong emphasis on equity and community engagement.

An ideal candidate is a collaborative and self-motivated individual with strong statistical and communication skills, who thrives in a fast-paced research setting and is eager to support methodologically rigorous work from design to dissemination.

    Key Responsibilities:

As part of the Quantitative Methods Core, responsibilities include:

    • Provide statistical consultation on study design, analytic strategies, and data management for new and ongoing clinical, pragmatic, epidemiologic, health services, and translational research projects.
    • Perform sample size and power calculations to support study planning and grant submissions.
    • Conduct advanced statistical analyses and develop, validate, and maintain reproducible analysis programs and workflows using software such as SAS, R, or STATA.
    • Integrate, query, manage, and prepare large, complex datasets—including electronic health records, claims, registry, clinical trial, and other administrative data—for analysis; identify potential data-quality issues and collaborate with study teams to resolve them.
    • Develop statistical analysis plans and contribute detailed methods and results sections for protocols, grants, manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations.
    • Serve as a lead statistician on assigned projects and contribute to federally funded and other extramural research, including clinical trials and Data Coordinating Center activities.
    • Interpret findings, independently recommend appropriate additional analyses as research questions evolve, and provide methodological guidance throughout the research lifecycle.
    • Deliver presentations and one-on-one consultations to support faculty development in research methods.
    • Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including clinicians, investigators, research staff, sponsors, and external collaborators.
    • Independently manage multiple projects with minimal supervision, establish and monitor analytic timelines, communicate project status and resource needs, and contribute to QMC-wide quality assurance and reproducible research practices.

    Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, or a related quantitative discipline.
    • At least 3 years of experience in applied biostatistics within clinical, public health, or academic research environments.
    • Strong programming skills and experience with statistical software such as SAS, R, or STATA.
    • Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects from design to publication independently.
    • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
    • Experience with large healthcare or administrative datasets (e.g., EHR, claims, registry, or multisource data) is strongly preferred.
    • Experience with epidemiologic study designs, clinical or pragmatic trials, health services research, or large healthcare datasets is strongly preferred.
    • Experience supporting extramural research, multicenter studies, or Data Coordinating Center activities is preferred.
