    • Citizenship / Access Requirements: U.S. citizenship is required. The candidate must satisfy all VA credentialing, suitability, PIV, privacy, information-security, and facility-access requirements.
    • Security Requirements: No classified clearance is specified. VA background/suitability screening, credentialing and privileging, PIV/access procedures, and required privacy and information-security training apply.
    • Type of Employment: Full-Time Contractor Position
    • Estimated Compensation: $72.77 per hour.
    • Staffing: One Board Certified Perfusionist (1.0 FTE) on site daily. Qualified backup coverage must be maintained for absences and vacancies.
    • Working Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, eight hours per day. The role also requires 24/7 on-call availability, including weekends and federal holidays, with the on-call Perfusionist remaining within 30 minutes of the facility. On-call status is not separately paid; emergency hours actually worked are paid at the applicable work rate.
    • Work Arrangement: On-site at Richmond VA Healthcare System. Telework is not authorized.
    • Period of Performance: September 30, 2026 through September 29, 2027, with a potential extension of services of up to six months.

    Summary of Services

    The Board Certified Perfusionist will provide on-site perfusion and autotransfusion services for VA beneficiaries. The role is approximately 90% direct patient care and 10% administrative and quality activities, supporting cardiothoracic procedures, extracorporeal circulation, perfusion equipment, emergency coverage, documentation, and patient-safety requirements.

    Mandatory Qualifications

    • U.S. citizenship.
    • Graduation from an accredited Allied Health Education Program School of Perfusion Technology.
    • Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
    • Minimum of two years of relevant Perfusionist experience and at least 200 clinical cases.
    • Demonstrated experience with open-heart surgery, autotransfusion, heart-lung machines, membrane oxygenation, left and right heart bypass, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and centrifugal ventricular assist devices.
    • Current, full, and unrestricted professional license, registration, certification, or other credentials as applicable.
    • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications.
    • Ability to maintain required CME/CEU, occupational-health, credentialing, privileging, and VA training requirements.
    • Ability to remain within 30 minutes of the facility while assigned on-call coverage.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provide perfusion and autotransfusion services for cardiothoracic bypass, valve replacement, and other assigned procedures.
    • Prepare, operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain heart-lung machines, pumps, autotransfusion equipment, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and centrifugal ventricular assist devices.
    • Support extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and balloon-pump patients as assigned.
    • Prepare extracorporeal circulation equipment and maintain adequate blood volume, perfusion, oxygenation, and patient safety.
    • Maintain sterile technique and help prevent shock, air emboli, equipment-related complications, and other clinical risks.
    • Review the electronic health record before procedures and develop or document the perfusion treatment plan.
    • Document perfusion services, treatment details, transfusion information, equipment use, and required medical-record entries accurately and promptly.
    • Respond to emergency surgical needs and provide 24/7 on-call coverage as scheduled.
    • Participate in QA/QI, patient-safety reporting, performance monitoring, staff meetings, required training, and continuing education.
    • Comply with VA policies, recognized national perfusion standards, infection-control requirements, privacy rules, and credentialing obligations.

    • Documentation supporting education, experience, clinical-case history, and credentialing requirements.
