Basic Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

Requires High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Boilers operators experience of 5 years minimum for low pressure steam boilers with operating pressure limited to under 15 psi. Boiler regular preventative maintenance experience as described in ASME CSD-1 and with preparing boilers for required inspections.  

Responsibilities for this Position

Boiler operator to run and maintain low pressure boilers that supply steam to heat the buildings and generate power for industrial purposes. Also, must perform water chemical analysis to treat the boilers. The boiler operator is responsible for heat and power of buildings and industrial plants. You operate automated or computerized systems that control the boilers and other equipment to achieve program and business objectives in a timely and quality manner.

 

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  (Including the following, but are not limited to) 

  • Must operate automated or computerized systems that control the boilers and other associated equipment.
  • Must monitor readings of gauges, panel board instruments and record charts to ensure that the boiler is operating properly.
  • Must check temperature and pressure and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Must activate valves to maintain the required amount of water in a boiler, adjust the supply of combustion air and control the flow of fuel, such as gas or oil into the burner. In addition, you add specific amounts of chemicals into the boiler feed water to control lime build-up or to adjust the alkaline level of the water.
  • Maintain and repair includes diagnostic troubleshooting, modify and/or make repairs to electrical, electronic circuits and hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems to correct operational deficiencies.
  • Carryout a preventive maintenance program for equipment involved in accordance with approved instructions.
  • Must disassemble and reassemble boilers after cleaning and inspection on a yearly basis.
  • Perform regular maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating compressors or tightening pipes/fittings and replacement/repair of piping and valves associated with boiler operation.
  • Required to keep a logbook recording your operation of the boiler.
  • Read, interpret and work to; drawings, schematics, wiring lists and diagrams, work instructions, sketches, work tasks and verbal directions.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Set up and maintain workstation and related materials, control of age-controlled items and hazardous materials and consumables.
  • Must be able to maintain the certificates, licenses and registrations required for their positions as defined in the qualifications below
  • Maintain the work area and perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Computer skills and Ability to operate various computer programs related to their position for time recording, machine systems and business instructions.
  • Also, required to do various trend data analysis of the operation of the boiler and gas consumption.
  •  Identifies opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute ratios, percent and interpret graphs.  Also, must be able to do trigonometric functions.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively with other employees of the organization.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Ability to question instructions when they are unclear.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and climb stairs and ladders or to use hands to feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; and talk and hear for 8 hours a day.  The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.  Job requires good eye hand coordination and high degree of manual dexterity.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Also, capable of operating a man lift to a height of 40 feet.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to some variation in work area temperature, wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, and potentially toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock and vibration.  The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate.

Combined Salary Range

USD $37.84 - USD $37.84 /Hr.
