Silver Lake Regional School District, Superintendency Union #31 is seeking to fill an opening for a Bookkeeper for the district to begin as soon as possible.

Position: Secretary/Bookkeeper SLRSD

Job Goal: To assist in the administration of the district's business affairs so as to provide for the maximum educational services for the financial resources available. To assure the smooth and efficient operation of the office so that the maximum positive impact on the education of children can be realized.

Supervision: Reports to Superintendent or Director of Finance and Operations

Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:

Required: High school diploma, GED or equivalent

Preferred: At least two years of prior experience as a bookkeeper or other relevant position. An Associates Degree in Business or Accounting. Knowledge of school/municipal finances, budgets, reporting, borrowing and investments.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Answers telephone, acts as receptionist, handles inquiries, etc.
  • Compiles and posts schedule of bills for all different departments and federal grants.
  • Processes and files all purchase orders.
  • Encumbers amounts on each purchase order.
  • Checks items off purchase orders from packing slips after items have been received.
  • Checks items off purchase orders from invoices, making sure packing slips and invoices correspond, confirming receipt of materials with staff.
  • File bills alphabetically.
  • Keep records of revolving accounts.
  • Post expenditures to accounts.
  • Check all statements from vendors each month.
  • Contacts vendors/staff about any discrepancies on statements, or any items back ordered.
  • Compiles monthly financial report.
  • Works cooperatively with officials at town hall.
  • Performs secretarial or clerical duties as assigned by Administration.
  • Maintains an accurate accounting of various accounts pertaining to the position.
  • Generates all checks (other than payroll) for disbursement.
  • Posts all receipts.
  • Maintains current files on all correspondence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Administration.

Special Knowledge/Abilities For Position:

  • Knowledge of proper business etiquette.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • A proficiency in typing and other secretarial skills, including bookkeeping.
  • Working knowledge of basic office procedures and the operation of common office equipment and machines.
  • Ability to work well with numerous departments and agencies.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to comprehend verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong demonstrated ability in working with automated fully-integrated accounting systems such as Computer Productivity, as well as Microsoft Excel, Works and Word.
  • Must be detail oriented.

Physical Requirements:

  • The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and climbing stairs and step stool whenever necessary.
  • Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting of objects of 20 pounds on a frequent basis, and over 20 pounds occasionally.
  • There is a frequent requirement of fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, typewriter, keyboard, calculator, and other business machines.

Environmental Conditions:

  • The occupant is required to work indoors.
  • The regular chemical solvent used are toners and cleaning fluids.

This is a full time, year round position. As a member of the SLEA Support Staff this is a union and benefits eligible position per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Salary is between $29.51 - $32.13 per hour based on experience and the SLEA contract.
