Boom Truck Operator

This position operates heavy equipment and commercial vehicles to assist in the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclable material.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Operates complex equipment including knuckle boom loaders, backhoes and other equipment for the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables at collection sites, County facilities and on County Rights of Way.
• Loads, unloads, packs, and combine containers at disposal/recycle sites, recycle facility and other designated County locations or facilities.
• Operates boom trucks, roll-off trucks, box trucks and pick-up trucks for collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables.
• Performs Pre and Post Trip inspections of assigned vehicle and equipment. Check equipment for damage or other problems at the end of each day. Report any problems to supervisor.
• Performs routine daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance and greasing on assigned vehicle and equipment.
• Washes and greases vehicle; keeps vehicle and equipment clean and maintained at all times.
• Assists with the clean-up of illegal and/or unauthorized dumps.
• Identifies hazardous material and reports to supervisor.
• Offloads collected materials at a designated transfer station, landfill, solid waste collection site, or appropriate recycle facility.
• Assist in overseeing and working with assigned County inmates.
• Assist with collecting, sorting, processing and transporting recyclable materials.
• Operates forklifts, clamp trucks, hand trucks, compactors and balers.
• Cleans and maintains grounds at disposal and recycling sites and locations.
• Occasionally operates a roll off truck performing duties associated with the Environmental Services Truck Driver position.
• Assists in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment including changing hydraulic hoses, fittings, and tires.
• Maintains an awareness of all activity around assigned equipment and practices defensive driving when in pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
• Takes the shortest and safest routes possible in transportation operations, obeying all traffic laws and monitoring other traffic, practices defensive driving techniques.
• Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Keeps immediate supervisor and designate others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned..

• Knowledge of equipment operation guidelines.
• Knowledge of traffic hazards, safety principles, rules, regulations and speed limits.
• Knowledge of Lee County geography, roads, convenience center and recycle locations.
• Knowledge of county and department regulations, policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma and one (1) year of related experience, or equivalent. Possession of a valid commercial, Class A or B, state issued driver's license.
