    Description

    Coaches in the Port Angeles School District play a critical role in supporting the growth, safety, and well-being of student-athletes. Port Angeles High School is seeking an Assistant Boys Tennis Coach for the fall season. The Assistant Coach will work under the direction of the Boys Tennis Head Coach to support all aspects of the tennis program, including player development, practice management, and match coverage across both Varsity and Junior Varsity levels.

    The regular fall tennis season runs from August 24th through November 14th. During this season, coaches must be available for weekday practices and games, with potential Saturday match or tournament responsibilities. In addition to the fall competitive season, the successful candidate must be available to support off-season tennis programming and summer conditioning or clinics, as directed by the Head Coach.

    Qualifications

    • Previous playing or coaching experience in tennis preferred.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of tennis fundamentals, strokes, scoring, match strategy, and court etiquette.
    • Ability to assist with planning and leading efficient practices, court rotations, and skill drills.
    • Availability to commit to weekday practice/game schedules and occasional Saturday events during the season (August 24 November 14).
    • Willingness and ability to drive school district vans to transport student-athletes to away matches.
    • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record to meet district driver clearance requirements.
    • Strong communication, time-management, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach, school staff, student-athletes, and parents.
    • Must meet or be willing to obtain all WIAA coaching certification requirements.
    • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain prior to the start of the season.
    • Must be willing to complete all district-required safety and compliance training.
    • Ability to maintain student confidentiality and adhere strictly to district and school policies.
    • Must be at least 21 years of age.

    Core Responsibilities

    In accordance with the Port Angeles School District Coaches Handbook, the Assistant Coach is responsible for fulfilling the following 11 Core Duties under the guidance of the Head Coach:

    • Duty to Warn Inform athletes and parents of inherent risks associated with athletic participation.
    • Duty to Provide Appropriate Activities Ensure drills and conditioning match the skill level and physical readiness of the athletes.
    • Duty to Provide Safe Facilities Inspect courts, nets, and surrounding areas for safety hazards prior to practice and competition.
    • Duty to Provide Safe Equipment Ensure team equipment, balls, and ball machines are maintained and properly stored.
    • Duty to Train and Instruct Provide safe, current, and effective technique instruction to prevent injury and promote skill development.
    • Duty to Supervise Maintain adequate supervision of student-athletes in the court area, locker rooms, and during team travel.
    • Duty to Provide Proper Discipline Maintain court decorum, sportsmanship, and appropriate conduct in alignment with school policy.
    • Duty to Provide Safe Transportation Drive district vans to transport team members safely to and from away competitions in compliance with district transportation policies.
    • Duty to Keep Athletes Safe and Healthy Monitor environmental conditions (heat, rain, air quality) and ensure athlete hydration and rest.
    • Duty to Provide Appropriate Emergency Care Respond promptly to injuries with basic first aid and execute emergency action plans when necessary.
    • Duty to Document and Report Timely log injury reports, facility issues, and administrative documentation as required.
