Job Title: Brooklyn Float Phlebotomist

Job Description

This floater phlebotomist role supports multiple locations across Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and occasionally Staten Island by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. The position requires an experienced phlebotomist who is confident working independently from day one, consistently delivers accurate and timely specimen handling, and communicates clearly and professionally with patients and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring safe, accurate, and efficient venipuncture from the first day on the job.
  • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, helping them understand the process and feel at ease.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure proper identification and traceability for every sample collected.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards and safety guidelines.
  • Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens securely for transport, following all protocols to protect sample quality during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature, place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, and accurately label them according to protocol.
  • Follow different procedures and protocols for specimen transport to maintain the integrity and stability of each sample.
  • Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and documentation tools.
  • Participate in interview and skills assessment processes, including a mock blood draw with a phlebotomy professional, as part of the hiring and onboarding process.
  • Maintain reliable and punctual attendance across assigned sites and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding schedules and workflow.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of recent phlebotomy experience with demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Strong proficiency with straight needles and the ability to perform independent venipunctures confidently from day one.
  • Demonstrated experience with specimen collection, including blood draws and other sample types.
  • Ability to perform and demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, communication, and data entry.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, matching of requisitions to specimens, and verification of test orders.
  • Reliable and punctual work habits with the ability to adhere to varying schedules across multiple locations.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and collaborate effectively with staff.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working as a phlebotomist in multiple clinical sites or as a floater is beneficial.
  • Comfort using laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and following specific protocols for splitting and freezing specimens.
  • Familiarity with updating patient information and handling electronic or computer-based requisitions and labels.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks while maintaining accuracy and compliance with procedures.
  • Willingness and ability to travel between assigned locations in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and occasionally Staten Island.
  • Professional demeanor and customer-service orientation when interacting with patients and healthcare staff.

Work Environment

This is a floater position that covers multiple sites in Brooklyn, Queens (including areas such as Ridgewood and Woodhaven), Manhattan, and occasionally Staten Island, with Staten Island travel kept very limited. The schedule includes extended shifts and variable hours: Monday and Tuesday from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Thursday and Friday from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., as needed. Every other Saturday is typically scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with Sundays worked as needed. Because this is a floater role, specific hours and site assignments may change based on operational needs. The work takes place in fast-paced laboratory and hospital settings that require consistent adherence to safety protocols, proper specimen handling, and professional interaction with patients and staff. The role involves frequent travel between sites, and mileage, tolls, and parking costs can be reimbursed in accordance with applicable policies. Phlebotomists use standard clinical equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers while maintaining a clean, organized, and professional work environment.
