Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled and lead work operating a grappler used in the collection of brush and bulky items from public properties. Working conditions are primarily in public streets with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces, high noise levels, oily surfaces, and heavy equipment. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Essential Job Functions
- Performs responsibilities of crew leader to include assisting supervisor in completion of performance appraisals.
- Inspects grappler and completes inspection reports as required.
- Drives and operates grappler in a safe manner in accordance with safety rules and traffic laws.
- Drives truck and trailer as needed.
- Provides direction to operators on safety procedures and uses shortest route to landfill/brush site.
- Ensures that all brush and debris have been collected in assigned area.
- Performs routine operator maintenance on grappler, as needed.
- Works with assigned crew to separate metals, tires and other recyclable items from brush prior to loading, frequently lifting and carrying materials weighing 40 pounds.
- Records travel time of each assigned crewmember to and from loading site.
- Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Five (5) years of experience operating light, medium and heavy equipment to include two (2) years of experience operating a front end loader, bobcat, or other automated heavy equipment.
- Valid Texas Commercial "A" Drivers License.
Applicant Information
- Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

- Skilled in the use of trucks, truck/trailer and automated heavy equipment.
- Ability to conduct vehicle inspections and trouble-shoot equipment problems.
- Ability to coordinate use of available equipment.
- Ability to delegate duties and resolve problems.
- Ability to supervise, train, and participate in staff performance evaluations.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
- Ability to learn City rules and directives required in the performance of duties.
