The Position
The Park District is currently recruiting for a Building and Grounds Aide. The current vacancy is on the Reservable Facilities team. The Reservable Facilities team is responsible for several popular and beloved venues in the Park District including the Brazilian Room in Tilden Regional Park, the Beach House at Lake Temescal, Fern Cottage at Kennedy Grove Regional Recreation Area, and the MLK Shoreline Center at Martin Luther King Jr, Regional Shoreline. The Building and Grounds Aide on the Reservable Facilities team plays a critical role in maintaining the high standards of our historic and reservable facilities, supporting memorable guest experiences, and protecting valuable public assets for future generations. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys meaningful, hands-on work, has good time management skills, excels in a fast-paced, appointment driven environment, and wants to contribute to the success of community celebrations in exceptional park settings. The hiring pools established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any additional vacancies that may occur during the one-year life of the hiring pools.

WHAT YOULL BE DOING:
Under general supervision, performs minor building maintenance, groundskeeping, and custodial tasks for a building or park facility; assists the public by phone, computer, and in person as assigned; and performs related duties as assigned.
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
Essential Functions
Minor Maintenance:
Performs preventive maintenance and simple repairs to keep facility functional
Changes lamp and light bulbs, cleans fixtures, washers in faucets and drinking fountains, and tightens loose screws, bolts, hinges, and other similar minor repairs
May perform more skilled repair tasks, including glazing broken windows, patching plaster, minor painting, assembling furniture, or fixing motor-driven equipment
Moving and reconfiguring office space and cubicles
Under a supervisors direction, arranges for and oversees District staff or outside vendors performing major repairs, and for emergency services for HVAC, elevators, and wheelchair lifts
Ensures displays and exhibits are working properly, as assigned
Groundskeeping:
Performs the full cycle of planting, watering and weeding of landscaped areas
Irrigates and mows lawns
Repairs minor water sprinkler systems leaks
Prunes shrubs and brush
Sweeps patio and sidewalks
Chops and stores wood
Performs the upkeep of grounds
Custodial:
Performs clean-up related tasks to keep the facility neat
Sweeps, dusts, mops, vacuums and shampoos carpets
Cleans restrooms, offices and kitchen areas
Picks up litter, recycles, and empties trash
Sets up rooms for events and meetings
Ensures facility is in an acceptable and functional condition for events
May perform other custodial tasks including stripping and waxing floors, washing windows and mirrors, and cleaning out gutters and fireplaces
Public Contact:
Answers questions regarding use of park facilities
May assist with weekly open house showings to the public
Checks for proper inclusion of licenses, permits and certificates of insurance
Assists customers
Refers atypical and problem cases to the supervisor
Monitors work of outside custodial firm
OTHER FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
Performs building security
Oversees District assigned pool vehicles
Performs routine service checks and arranges for maintenance and car washes as required
Keeps inventory of and orders custodial and other related supplies
Completes forms and logs
Prepares requisitions
Maintains accounts and records
Picks up and delivers mail and supplies
Performs minor administrative duties, including making phone calls, emailing, and maintaining calendar
Gives access to the facility and available amenities for events and closes and secures the facility
May work with cleaning solutions
Works outdoors in various weather conditions
Performs related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade
AND
Experience: Two years of experience with a combination of minor building maintenance, groundskeeping, custodial, and public contact duties

AFSCME: East Bay Regional Parks Employees, Local 2428, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, represents this classification. Wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment are covered in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Park District and Local 2428. The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.
Internal Promotions: Placement shall be made at the first step in the salary range for the new position (Step A) unless the salary rate at Step A of the new position is less than a 5% increase. In such instances, the employee will be placed at a step in the new salary range that ensures at least a 5% increase.
