Position Summary
Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates (HCEA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Building Envelope Division Manager to lead and grow our Building Envelope Consulting and Testing practice. This position is responsible for technical oversight, project management, staff leadership/management, client development, and overall operational performance of HCEA's building envelope services.
The Division Manager will oversee all HCEA projects involving roofing systems, air barriers, waterproofing systems, exterior wall assemblies, and building fenestration systems. The successful candidate will manage a team of inspectors and consultants while coordinating specialized subcontractors performing field performance testing, including window air infiltration, water penetration, and nozzle testing services.
This position requires a strong technical background in building envelope consulting, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated experience managing projects, personnel, and client relationships.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
· Provide technical oversight and quality assurance for building envelope consulting, inspection, and testing projects.
· Review project documents, specifications, shop drawings, and field reports for compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
· Evaluate roofing, waterproofing, air barrier, cladding, and fenestration systems during design, construction, and post-construction phases.
· Develop inspection protocols, testing procedures, and reporting standards.
· Assist clients in identifying and resolving building envelope deficiencies and performance concerns.
Project Management
· Manage multiple concurrent projects from proposal through project closeout.
· Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and staffing plans.
· Monitor project performance to ensure technical quality, profitability, and client satisfaction.
· Prepare and review technical reports, inspection reports, and recommendations.
· Coordinate project activities with owners, architects, contractors, developers, and other project stakeholders.
Testing Program Oversight
· Manage building envelope testing programs including:
· Roofing inspections and evaluations
· Air barrier inspections and testing coordination
· Waterproofing inspections and quality assurance
· Building enclosure commissioning support
· Fenestration inspections
· Window and curtain wall performance testing
· Coordinate and oversee subcontracted testing consultants performing:
· ASTM air infiltration testing
· ASTM water penetration testing
· Chamber testing
· Field nozzle testing
· Curtain wall and storefront performance testing
· Review testing results and provide technical interpretation and recommendations.
Leadership and Business Development
· Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise building envelope personnel.
· Establish division goals, performance metrics, and growth strategies.
· Support business development initiatives through client meetings, networking, proposal preparation, and presentations.
· Maintain and expand relationships with architects, contractors, developers, property owners, and facility managers.
· Identify opportunities to expand HCEA's building envelope services throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
Financial and Operational Management
· Manage division profitability, utilization, backlog, and revenue targets.
· Review contracts and proposals for technical and commercial risks.
· Monitor project budgets and invoicing.
· Support strategic planning and annual business objectives for the division.
Qualifications
Education
· Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Building Science, or a related field required.
· Advanced degree preferred.
Experience
· Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in building envelope consulting, inspection, testing, or enclosure commissioning.
· Demonstrated experience managing building envelope projects involving roofing, waterproofing, air barriers, and fenestration systems.
· Experience supervising technical staff and managing project teams.
· Experience coordinating and overseeing field performance testing programs and specialty testing subcontractors.
· Proven ability to develop client relationships and contribute to business growth.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Strong understanding of building enclosure systems and construction practices.
· Working knowledge of applicable ASTM, AAMA, ABAA, ICC, and IBC standards related to building envelope performance.
· Excellent report writing and technical communication skills.
· Strong project management and organizational abilities.
· Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
· Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and team development skills.
· Strong client relationship and business development capabilities.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
