Job Summary:

Reviews plans for proposed commercial projects, remodels, and additions. Conducts physical building, plumbing, and electrical inspections and addresses violations and issues citations as appropriate.

Typical Duties:

  1. Conducts commercial plan reviews including commercial remodel and addition projects; issues letters of approval or denial as required
  2. Performs structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing inspections per City adopted code and ordinances on residential and commercial projects; verifies that all construction meets code and local requirements.
  3. Answers phones; responds to inquiries regarding all construction jobs, codes, ordinance, and related laws
  4. Investigates problems and issues as assigned.
  5. Issues "stop work" orders and Municipal Court citations as appropriate.
  6. Participates in City-wide emergency response as necessary.
  7. Attends various meetings.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND five (5) years of construction experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of Department policies and procedures; International Building and Mechanical Codes; National Electrical codes; General building practices and their application to individual structures; State and Federal laws pertaining to commercial construction
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with field supervisors and other personnel.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; Diagnosing and resolving permit and construction issues; Operating a personal computer, standard software, and some specialized software; Communicating clearly, both orally and in writing; Reading and interpreting blueprints and plans.
  • International Building Code or International Residential Code certification(s).
  • Texas State Plumber Inspector License required or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • Valid State driver's license required.


Work Environment:

This position primarily involves working in a field environment. May be exposed to some unsafe structures, unsafe electrical installations, and high voltage. Requires safety procedures to be followed including the use of personal protective equipment. Will be working around heavy construction equipment. May be exposed to odors and fumes. Will be exposed to adverse/inclement weather conditions while working outside. May work variable hours and or weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to bend, climb and squat to perform duties. Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have dexterity with fingers and hands to operate hand tools and small equipment. Must be able to smell odors and fumes. Maintain physical condition necessary for walking and standing for prolonged periods of time. Hearing and vision must be satisfactory to the degree that duties may be performed effectively and safely.

Miscellaneous Information

The City of Granbury offers a competitive salary depending on qualifications and experience. The city participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) at a 8% employee deposit rate with a city matching ratio of 2:1. The city pays 100% of the employee's medical insurance and term life insurance. Full-time employees receive 40 hours of vacation at 6 months, then accrue each pay period based on the number of years employed up to 160 hours. 48 hours of Sick leave at 6 months, then accrue 3.70 hours each pay period. Full-time employees are eligible for 14 paid holidays. A full range of insurance benefits is also provided to full time employees. The city also provides a 9/80 work schedule where employees have every other Friday off.
