Building Permit Processing Specialist

BPR Consulting Group (www.bpr-grp.com) is seeking a Building Permit Processing Specialist for a temporary 2–4 week assignment supporting one of our clients. 

The successful candidate will assist with the review, processing, organization, and movement of building permit applications through the permitting process. The position will work closely with BPR staff and client representatives to efficiently process an estimated backlog of approximately 150 building permit applications.

This is a fast-paced, project-oriented assignment that requires strong attention to detail, organization, communication skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of customer service.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties noted below are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, functions, and skills. They are intended to be a summary of key job responsibilities and duties.

• Review and process building permit applications in an efficient and timely manner.
• Review applications for completeness and identify missing information or required documentation.
• Assist with the organization and processing of an existing building permit backlog.
• Review permit submittals and supporting documentation for compliance with established submittal requirements.
• Communicate with contractors, architects, engineers, property owners, and applicants regarding permit requirements and outstanding items.
• Coordinate with building department staff and other reviewing agencies as necessary to move applications through the permitting process.
• Enter, update, and maintain accurate permit information and application status in applicable permitting systems.
• Track applications and outstanding items to help ensure timely processing and completion.
• Assist with responding to applicant inquiries by phone, email, or in person as assigned.
• Maintain organized records and documentation related to permit applications.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge of building permit processes, building department operations, and construction terminology.
• Previous experience working in a building department, permit center, planning department, public works department, or related environment.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple applications and priorities while meeting established deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
• Experience with electronic permitting or building department software is preferred.
• Knowledge of California building codes and permitting requirements is beneficial.

Certifications / Experience:

• ICC Permit Technician certification preferred.
• Previous experience as a Permit Technician, Permit Specialist, Plans Examiner, Building Department Technician, or similar position preferred.
• One year or more of experience working in a building department or related public agency environment preferred.
• Related administrative or technical experience in a public-sector building, planning, or public works department is a plus.

Schedule & Assignment:

• Temporary assignment: approximately 2–4 weeks

Compensation:

BPR Consulting Group offers competitive hourly compensation based on qualifications and experience. Pay range: $24–$36 per hour.
