Position Summary
The Bus Aide is responsible for assisting the school bus driver in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment for students during transportation. The Bus Aide provides direct support to students while boarding, riding, and exiting the bus and helps ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers, including students with special needs.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist the bus driver in maintaining safe and orderly transportation of students to and from school and district-approved activities.
- Monitor student behavior on the bus and reinforce appropriate conduct expectations.
- Assist students while boarding and exiting the bus, including the use of safety equipment, wheelchair lifts, and securement systems as needed.
- Provide support to students with disabilities or special transportation needs, ensuring dignity and safety at all times.
- Assist with seating arrangements, student supervision, and maintaining a calm bus environment.
- Communicate behavior concerns, safety issues, or emergencies to the bus driver immediately.
- Assist during emergency procedures and evacuations as directed by the bus driver or transportation staff.
- Maintain awareness of student attendance and ensure all students are accounted for at stops.
- Support positive interactions between students and encourage appropriate bus behavior.
- Follow all district transportation policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and district information.
- Assist the bus driver in completing required reports or documentation as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the bus driver or Director of Transportation.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience working with children or individuals with special needs is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, mobile environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with the bus driver.
- Demonstrated patience, reliability, and professionalism.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and move within a school bus for extended periods.
- Ability to assist students with boarding, exiting, and seating.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist students when needed.
- Ability to perform emergency evacuation assistance.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions during student loading and unloading.
