Salary is determined on directly related experience supported by a service record or experience affidavit. Annualized pay may be pro-rated based on actual start date.

Bus Driver Trainees (NON-CDL) or (CDL W/O Passenger & School Bus Endorsements)

  • Training Period: During the initial training period (not to exceed 90 calendar days), the hourly rate will be $19.50 per hour and employment status will be temporary.
  • Post-Training: Upon successful completion of training and obtaining the CDL with the required endorsements, the hourly rate will increase to the amount offered by the Human Resources Department for the full-time bus driver position.

Position Summary

Operate school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other

authorized persons on assigned route and to and from other designated locations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Texas Class "B" CDL license with all required endorsements.
  • Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability

coverage eligibility).

  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam.
  • Must reside in the State of Texas and be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must obtain and maintain School Bus Driver Certification (Texas Department of Public Safety).
  • Satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Texas Class "B" or "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required "Passenger" and

"School Bus" endorsements for school bus driver.

  • Previous driving experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain current CPR and First Aid certification in accordance with district and

state requirements.

  • Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Proficient map reading skills.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate bus.

Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities

  • Drive bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules.
  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  • Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make

necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.

  • Perform pre-and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated

safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs.

  • Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete

required corresponding reports.

  • Operate and monitor push to talk phone equipment to communicate with transportation office and

other drivers.

  • Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not

limited to those related to bus mileage, maintenance requirements, and number of passengers

transported.

  • Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations.
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students from the bus when necessary.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags,

fuses, crowbar, and reflector.

  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately

correctable to supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.

  • Regularly monitor district email for pertinent communication.
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and seminars as scheduled.
  • Daily attendance at work and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
  • Keep informed of and comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of

Education rule, and board policy.

  • Comply with all district routines and regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Operate school bus; Two-way radio, PTT phone; safety equipment including but not

limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher.

Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending,

stooping, and pushing/pulling.

Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and

shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.

Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (under 45 pounds) on a daily basis.

Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work

around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular hours and occasionally work prolonged hours.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise students as they board and exit the bus, as well as while crossing the street.
  • Maintain discipline and implement effective behavior management strategies for groups of

students.

  • Report any disciplinary issues to the relevant administrator and communicate with teachers and

parents about student behavior as necessary.

  • Maintain constant supervision of students and verify that they are received by the designated staff

member upon drop-off.
