JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Bus Driver
Reports to: Director of Transportation
Employment Status: Beachwood Union of Support Staff BUSS Contract
I. Position Summary
Transport students to and from a variety of school sites and activities.
II. Required Education, Experience & Qualifications
- High School education or equivalent.
- A valid and appropriate Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with State of Ohio Certification to drive a school bus.
- Two or more years experience as a bus driver preferred.
- Satisfactory completion of BCII and FBI background checks.
III. Job Responsibilities & Duties
- Drive a school bus safely in accordance with all applicable Federal and Ohio State Laws.
- Follow time schedules.
- Oversee the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individuals.
- May operate a special lift bus and load and unload students in wheelchairs.
- Properly secure students if required in bus seats or wheelchair harnessing.
- Maintain order and proper discipline of passengers, resolving disputes, documenting, and reporting severe disciplinary cases.
- Conduct daily safety and operational inspection and paperwork of assigned vehicle.
- Maintain a variety of records and reports including, but not limited to, mileage, routing, maintenance, and time schedules as required.
- Attend meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned.
- Maintain current required licenses and certificates.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
IV. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of effective child guidance practices and principles.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to complete mandated training requirements required for licensing by the Ohio Department of Education.
- Ability to effectively communicate and relate to students in a positive and sensitive manner.
- Ability to maintain effectiveness in a stressful situation.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
V. Personal Conduct Requirements
- The employee shall exercise honesty and integrity in his/her relationships with the Board of Education and the administration.
- The employee shall promote a positive image of the District through exemplary personal conduct.
- The employee shall report misconduct or violations of policy or procedure following established Board policy.
- The employee shall actively support the efforts of the Board of Education and the Superintendent in the pursuit of District goals and interests.
- The employee shall not disrupt District operations or undermine the positions of the Board of Education and administration.
- The employee shall demonstrate the ability to interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and the public and promote a positive image of the district through exemplary personal conduct, including but not limited to:
- The ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing with tact, diplomacy, and excellent grammar.
- The demonstration of effective listening skills.
- Remaining free of any alcohol or controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Beachwood City School District.
VI. Physical Demands
Ability to hear and speak, read and write, sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, use hands to operate a computer and other equipment, kneel, bend at the waist, reach overhead (above the shoulders) and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds.
