Position Summary
The Bus Driver is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and timely transportation for Greenwood Community School Corporation students to and from school, extracurricular activities, and other district-sponsored events. The Bus Driver promotes a safe and positive environment while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and district transportation regulations and procedures.
Essential Responsibilities
- Safely operate a school bus on assigned routes and activity trips in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Conduct required pre-trip, post-trip, and daily safety inspections of the assigned vehicle.
- Transport students safely and efficiently to and from school, field trips, athletic events, and other district-sponsored activities.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful environment on the school bus by enforcing district transportation rules and expectations.
- Follow established routes, schedules, and transportation procedures while adapting to route changes when necessary.
- Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus, including students with disabilities or special transportation needs as required.
- Properly operate wheelchair lifts, child safety restraints, and other specialized transportation equipment when applicable.
- Maintain accurate route logs, inspection reports, mileage records, and other required documentation.
- Report accidents, student discipline concerns, vehicle maintenance issues, and safety hazards promptly to the Transportation Department.
- Keep the assigned bus clean, fueled, and in good operating condition by reporting maintenance needs in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and district information.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents, school personnel, and transportation staff.
- Attend required safety meetings, in-service training, certification renewals, and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid Indiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements, or the ability to obtain required licensure and endorsements.
- Valid Indiana Department of Education School Bus Driver Certification, or the ability to obtain certification.
- Current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiners Certificate.
- Successful completion of required background checks, drug and alcohol screenings, and driving record review.
- Previous commercial or school bus driving experience is preferred but not required.

- Knowledge of school bus safety procedures, traffic laws, and defensive driving techniques.
- Ability to safely operate a school bus under varying weather and traffic conditions.
- Ability to maintain student discipline in a calm, respectful, and professional manner.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely operate a school bus for extended periods.
- Ability to climb bus steps, bend, stoop, reach, and perform safety inspections.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to assist students during loading, unloading, and emergency evacuations.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and tolerate prolonged sitting.
