PRIMARY PURPOSE

Ride buses and assist the driver in ensuring safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Student Management

• Assist students on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
• Supervise students as they board and exit the bus and cross the street following established safety procedures.
• Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and riding rules and regulations.
• Learn and adapt to each student's medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
• Manage student behavior and report discipline concerns in a timely manner to the appropriate administrator.
• Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student behavior on the bus when necessary.

Routes and Schedules

• Become familiar with all routes and schedules to assist the driver.
• Complete and maintain accurate, updated, and timely records and reports.

Safety

• Ensure seat belts, harnesses, and car seats are used correctly and assist students with safety devices as needed.
• Follow emergency procedures, including evacuation, and assist with first aid when necessary.
• Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Follow proper procedures when lifting and assisting students.

Other

• Follow procedures established by transportation and special education departments.
• Review transportation forms to ensure student IEP requirements are followed.
• Assist the driver in keeping the bus clean.
• Work irregular hours as needed.
• Attend and complete required annual training.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA.

Wheelchair lift, ramp, locking mechanisms, and special needs adaptive equipment.

Tools/Equipment Used: Wheelchair lift, ramp, locking systems, and adaptive equipment.

Posture: Frequent standing and sitting; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Frequent walking and reaching.

Lifting: Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), assisting with student positioning, physical support, and moving adaptive equipment.

Environment: Work inside and outside; exposure to weather conditions, noise, vehicle fumes, and biological hazards; work around moving vehicles and machinery.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.
