Summary

The Bus Monitor provides assistance to the Driver with the transportation of passengers by managing rider conduct and ensuring safety while following all applicable Federal, state, and local rules and regulations. The individual in this position will provide daily assistance on assigned routes by maintaining order on vehicles.

Essential Duties

  • Assists Driver in maintaining order on paratransit vehicle; monitors and assists passengers while vehicle is in operation
  • Manages passenger behavior objectively and in a non-confrontational manner
  • Assists with passenger loading / unloading and seating arrangements as required
  • Assists driver with vehicle and passenger emergencies in a calm, appropriate manner
  • Maintains current knowledge of emergency procedures and assists Driver with the administration of first aid, if necessary
  • Assists Driver with keeping the vehicle clean
  • Establishes and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships; exercises tact and courtesy when interacting with others
  • Meets regular time and attendance standards
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned

Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Required Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

Education: This position does not require a high school diploma or GED. Previous experience working with individuals with special needs and/or children is highly desirable.

Experience:

This position requires the following general knowledge:

  • Customer service and public relations principles
  • Safety practices concerning public transportation, specifically paratransit
  • Applicable Federal, State and Local laws, rules, and regulations

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Ability to coordinate with Driver to maintain order and safety of passengers aboard the vehicle
  • Ability to understand and relate to children and/or individuals with special needs
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with passengers, drivers, supervisor, and the public sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work extended hours, as necessary
  • Meets regular time and attendance standards
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned

Computer Skills Required:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have at minimum:

  • Basic Internet skills

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, an individual is frequently required to sit, stand, walk and talk or hear. Occasionally, an individual will need to bend at the waist while working and climb stairs. On rare occasions, the individual will need to reach or work with arms above shoulders, kneel, stoop, crouch or squat.

The specific vision requirement listed for this position is:

  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)

Work Environment:

Duties will typically be performed within a paratransit vehicle (where the noise level is moderate to loud) and/or outdoors, which may necessitate dealing with excessive heat or cold and/or moderate to loud noise levels.

This position requires the following documents to be obtained, reviewed as acceptable by the supervisor, and re-obtained every five (5) years:
