Compensation Data

The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. The expected pay range for this position is between $20.00 per hour and $28.00 per hour. If you are hired at American Water your compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, candidate's program year, discipline, and degree. Primary Role

Join California American Water as a Business Development & Strategy Intern and gain hands-on exposure to the strategic processes behind identifying, securing, and integrating acquisitions. Based out of our Sacramento office, this internship offers the opportunity to work alongside a fast-paced, fun team while gaining exposure to a dynamic and essential industry. As part of American Water (NYSE: AWK), the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., California American Water provides safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services to communities across the state. Key Accountabilities

  • Gain firsthand experience in the full spectrum of business development activities, including acquisition strategy, research, and integration planning.
  • Support the BD team in organizing and maintaining SharePoint documentation for improved efficiency and accessibility.
  • Assist in compiling and organizing testimony and regulatory documentation related to acquisitions.
  • Help develop and maintain a public-facing database of affirmative acquisition references to support future growth initiatives.
  • Conduct research and prepare reports to support a wide variety of items including acquisition evaluations and strategic planning.
  • Assist with databases and other reporting tools to compile, calculate, track, and report data pertaining to various processes.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Communication: Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and excels in both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical Skills: Effective problem solving and ability to conduct research, analyze data, and present findings clearly.
  • Organizational Skills: Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage documentation and support project workflows.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and database tools.
  • Independent Worker: Ability to manage time across multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Collaborative: Willingness to work closely with cross-functional teams.

Experience/Education

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate degree program in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of completed coursework.

Travel Requirements

Other

  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Ability to work on site a minimum of 16 hours per week
