Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Established in 2003, the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies, an interdisciplinary academic program in the College of Arts and Sciences, promotes a deeper understanding of Jewish history, culture and thought through its teaching, research and community outreach initiatives.

Position Summary

The Department Manager of the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies (CCJS) provides comprehensive operational, strategic, and programmatic leadership in support of the Center's mission in research, teaching, and community engagement. Reporting to the Faculty Director, this position serves as the primary administrative and operational contact for CCJS and provides independent counsel on initiatives of varying scope and complexity. The role integrates administrative, financial, programming, and external-facing responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

The Department Manager oversees all financial operations, including budget development and monitoring, forecasting, and management of multiple funding sources. Responsibilities include full oversight of vendor and independent contractor processes, invoice and payment administration, and preparation of financial reports, while advising the Director on budget planning and account status.

The role manages core administrative functions, serving as a liaison with college and university business and HR offices to ensure policy compliance and operational efficiency. This includes office management, event logistics, and occasional after-hours support for programs and events.

The Department Manager leads recruitment, hiring, and management for CCJS student interns, graduate student employees, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars.

This position provides senior-level leadership for CCJS programming, outreach, and partnerships, identifying opportunities for growth and expansion. The Manager oversees and project-manages all events including lectures, seminars, performances, and conferences and coordinates co-sponsorships that engage faculty, students, alumni, and the broader community.

The role directs the Center's marketing and communications strategy, including website oversight, social media, publications, branding, and development of marketing and media materials.

In addition, the Department Manager oversees fellowships and grant programs, managing budgets, application and review processes, and full-cycle administration. The position also supports advancement efforts through fundraising strategy, donor engagement and stewardship, annual fund initiatives, Giving Day activities, and preparation of materials for donors and advisory boards.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Management Preferences

  1. Previous experience in journalism/communications

  2. Business/event management or humanities/social sciences appropriate to the mission of Jewish Studies

  3. Previous experience in marketing/branding, event management and fund raising

  4. Budget Management/Accounting experience

  5. Ability to partner with UNC/CCJS alumni and the community
