Electrical Engineer – Cable Plant

Location: Berkeley, California
Employment Type: Full-Time
Duration: 1 year + two additional 1-year option periods

Job Summary

The position is based in Berkeley, California and includes field activities related to electrical and cable plant installation, integration, testing, commissioning, inspection, troubleshooting, and technical coordination.

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support a major cable plant and electrical infrastructure project.

The engineer will support the design, planning, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical and cable plant systems. The role will focus on AC distribution, electrical equipment installation, cable distribution and routing, cable tray/raceway systems, grounding, engineering documentation, and resolution of technical design and installation issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support electrical engineering and design for:

    • AC distribution

    • Electrical equipment installation

    • Cable distribution and routing

    • Cable tray/raceway systems

    • Grounding and related infrastructure

  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, rack layouts, cable routing plans, equipment layouts, parts lists, BOMs, specifications, and installation work instructions.

  • Develop and evaluate cable routing and cable tray/raceway solutions.

  • Apply NEC requirements to electrical distribution, equipment installation, grounding, and cabling.

  • Select and evaluate electrical components based on technical requirements, reliability, maintainability, safety, and applicable codes.

  • Use CAD, 3D CAD, BIM, and electrical engineering tools to develop and maintain designs.

  • Participate in electrical and multidisciplinary technical reviews.

  • Resolve electrical design, installation, and technical interface issues.

Installation & Field Support

  • Support electrical and cable plant installation planning.

  • Evaluate field conditions affecting electrical design and installation.

  • Review cable routing, cable tray/raceway, equipment installation, and electrical infrastructure.

  • Support contractor and subcontractor electrical design and installation activities.

  • Participate in field, installation, design, and technical reviews.

  • Support inspections, installation readiness, procurement, and kitting activities.

  • Support electrical system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.

Documentation & Technical Coordination

  • Prepare and maintain electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.

  • Develop cable routing plans and cable tray/raceway layouts.

  • Create equipment and rack layouts.

  • Prepare parts lists and Bills of Materials.

  • Develop engineering specifications and technical procurement documentation.

  • Prepare interface documents and installation work instructions.

  • Perform engineering calculations and technical evaluations.

  • Maintain design-review documentation, field markups, and as-built documentation.

  • Prepare testing and commissioning documentation.

  • Maintain configuration-controlled engineering records.

  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, technicians, contractors, subcontractors, operations personnel, and other technical stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field with at least 2 years of related engineering experience, OR Master's degree with at least 1 year of related experience, or equivalent education and experience.

  • Experience with electrical, electronics, and facility system design and implementation.

  • Experience developing and interpreting electrical engineering drawings and documentation.

  • Experience with schematics, layouts, wiring diagrams, cable routing plans, and BOMs.

  • Working knowledge of NEC requirements applicable to AC distribution and electrical equipment installation.

  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software.

  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as Revit or comparable tools.

  • Experience with E-CAD tools for schematic capture, electrical layout, simulation, and design-for-manufacture.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively across multiple engineering disciplines and in a team environment.

  • Ability to perform required field activities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work execution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of related electrical engineering experience.

  • Experience independently leading electrical engineering design and implementation for complex systems.

  • Strong experience with electrical distribution, equipment installation, cabling, cable routing, cable tray/raceway systems, grounding, or experimental electrical systems.

  • Advanced knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70, and NFPA 70E.

  • Experience with Revit, BIM, or multidisciplinary 3D design coordination.

  • Experience with SKM and/or ETAP.

  • Experience overseeing contractor/subcontractor electrical design and installation.

  • Experience with electrical system integration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience supporting project cost, schedule, procurement, and installation execution.

  • Experience in a research laboratory, national laboratory, particle accelerator, industrial facility, or similar complex technical environment.

  • Experience with electrical equipment and systems used in particle accelerators.

  • Experience working in a DOE environment or DOE O 413.3B scientific projects.

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, particularly with power electronics or power supplies experience.

  • EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Experience with Creo Parametric.
