Job Description

The Electrical Drafter supports the physical design of electrical substations by producing accurate and detailed drawings, layouts, and calculations. This role focuses on creating general arrangement drawings, ground grid layouts, elevation views, electrical layouts, and conduit drawings using AutoCAD and related design tools. The Electrical Drafter collaborates with engineering teams to ensure that all designs meet technical, safety, and performance requirements for power and energy projects.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed physical design drawings for substations, including general arrangement plans, ground grid layouts, elevation views, electrical layouts, and conduit drawings.
• Create and revise substation drawings using AutoCAD and SDS, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to project specifications and standards.
• Perform calculations related to AC and DC loads to support the sizing and selection of electrical equipment and conductors.
• Calculate bus spans and ampacity to ensure that buswork and conductors meet performance, safety, and capacity requirements.
• Collaborate with engineers and other project team members to interpret design requirements and translate them into clear and precise drafting deliverables.
• Maintain organized drawing files and documentation to support project tracking, revisions, and quality control.
• Review and update existing electrical design and drafting documents to reflect design changes and field conditions.
• Apply electrical drafting standards and best practices to ensure consistency and quality across all substation drawings.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD for electrical drafting and design work.
• Experience with substation physical design, including general arrangements, ground grids, elevation views, and electrical layouts.
• Strong understanding of electrical drafting principles and standards in power and energy environments.
• Ability to calculate AC and DC loads to support substation design requirements.
• Ability to calculate bus spans and ampacity for substation buswork and conductors.
• Experience preparing conduit drawings and electrical layouts for substations.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in drafting and documentation.
• Ability to interpret engineering requirements and convert them into clear, detailed drawings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience as an AutoCAD Drafter with a focus on electrical design.
• Experience with SDS or similar design software used in substation projects.
• Familiarity with power and energy industry standards related to substation design.
• Ability to work collaboratively with engineering and project teams to support design objectives.

Work Environment

This role operates in an office environment, working primarily on a computer using AutoCAD, SDS, and other drafting and design tools. The position involves focused design and drafting work, collaboration with engineering staff, and regular interaction with digital drawing and documentation systems.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of OVERLAND PARK, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
