Position Title Campus Police Sergeant Job Duties

Campus Police Officers patrol college grounds, areas, and college buildings as required. Patrolling efforts are determined by policy and the department supervisor, which may include patrolling by foot and vehicle. Patrols are designed to maintain safety, deter and prevent crime, uphold state and local law, and enforce state statutes in a campus environment.

Officers routinely interact with Butler Community College (BCC) community members and other citizens within the jurisdiction of the college campus in an appropriate manner to further efforts fortifying public safety, crime prevention, and compliance with BCC policies/regulations and the State of Kansas. Officers complete and create reports related to but not limited to reported incidents, vehicle accidents, and other reported activities.

The Sergeant serves as the supervisor for Campus Police Officers and Security Officers in the absence of the Chief and is responsible for overseeing daily patrol operations, ensuring effective law enforcement services, maintaining campus safety, and supporting the mission of the college through a student-centered approach.

The Sergeant performs police duties as needed while providing leadership, training, mentoring, and operational guidance to assigned staff. The Sergeant is responsible for maintaining professional standards, monitoring officer performance, reviewing reports, and ensuring effective customer service is delivered to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Qualifications

Required knowledge and skills

  • Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Kansas criminal statutes and applicable federal laws.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate, develop, and evaluate employees.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make sound decisions during emergencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and review reports accurately.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and law enforcement records management systems.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency call-outs.
  • Ability to meet all physical requirements necessary to perform law enforcement duties.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must successfully complete required departmental supervisory

Required experience

  • Kansas Certified Law Enforcement Officer in good standing.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience.
  • Some prior leadership experience (supervisory, lead, FTO, or specialized assignment) is required.
  • Experience in community-oriented policing and higher education environments preferred.

Required educational background

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must maintain Kansas law enforcement certification through CPOST.
  • Associate degree, or higher, in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field is preferred.
