    JOB TITLE: CAMPUS SAFETY OFFICER GROUP: TEAMSTERS I LEVEL: Campus Safety Officer FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt WORK DAYS PER FISCAL YEAR: 180 HOLIDAYS: 11 SUMMARY: The position of Campus Safety Officer assists school administration in maintaining a positive school environment and responds to incidents pertaining to the safety of students and staff. The position patrols and supervises high school parking lots and building areas where students congregate before, during, and after school; registers vehicles; serves as a liaison with the Highline School District Security Department and the local authorities; works with staff and student leaders to develop and implement campus policies and procedures; and performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Safety and Security or designee.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.     • Responsible for specific assigned school campus and the adjacent areas.
    • Monitors parking lots and building areas where students congregate before school, during the school day, and after school.
    • Facilitates the registration of vehicles and enforcement of parking violations; however, impoundment of vehicles from district property will be the exclusive responsibility of the District Security Department and/or local police agencies.
    • Serves as a liaison with the Highline School District Security Department and the local authorities.
    • Works with staff and student leaders to develop and implement campus policies and procedures.
    • Patrols school property for safety of staff and students and the physical security of the buildings and property.
    • Assists in establishing a positive rapport with students, parents, staff and community agencies; promotes communication with students to ensure a safe campus environment; and encourages prescribed standards of conduct and behavior and positive student attitudes.     • Document criminal activity as well as school/district policy violations. Completes security incident statements according to security procedures. Assists both school district security and local law enforcement agencies with investigations when requested.
    • Meets and interacts with students and non -students on and adjacent to high school property, gathers information and, if necessary, issues No-Trespass Warnings where appropriate.
    • Campus Safety Officers may only carry pepper spray, radio, and handcuffs in performance of duties.
    • Assist with supervision at school events.
    • Performs search of student and/or school property shall be done when there is reasonable suspicion.
    • Responds to incidents involving alcohol, drugs, fights, and threatening situations and intervenes in conflicts between students and may physically detain individuals in circumstances where such detention is allowed by state law.
    • Attends job related training and meetings with administrative approval.
    • Provide testimony in court or hearings on school related cases.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent Two years' experience working with school-age students

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Previous security officer/law enforcement work experience

    CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Criminal background clearance Valid WA State Driver's License All certificates, licenses, endorsements, permits, and vaccines (absent exemption) as required for this position by state and local authorities Complete training in first aid and CPR and ongoing district directed training Must have approved training in chemical spray and restraint techniques prior to their use Pass a post hire, Pre-Employment Physical Assessment

    REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Director of Security and Safety or designee

    EVALUATION: This position will be evaluated by the Principal or designee based on performance of duties and responsibilities.

    While performing this job, the employee is r equired to frequently walk and stand for prolonged periods and occasionally sit. The employees must be able to squat, kneel, and crawl 50 feet as needed. The employee must be able to grip/grasp/hold in defensive moves. The position requires fine finger dexterity. The employee may be required in some positions to have sufficient dexterity, mobility, physical ability and stamina, to restrain individuals in accordance with established guidelines, and sufficient mobility to respond to student's needs. The employee is required to lift/carry a maximum of 15 pounds constantly, up to 20 pounds frequently , and up to 70 pounds occasionally. The employee is required to push and/or pull a maximum force of 112 pounds

    This position requires visual concentration on detail and physical dexterity. The person holding this position is required to work outdoors in inclement weather. This position could experience frequent to occasional confrontational situations with intruders on school grounds which requires constant awareness of an attention to personal safety. The employee must have the ability to make effective decisions and solve problems using sound judgment in crisis situations; requires individual initiative and teamwork; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult individuals and "at risk" youth. This position requires excellent listening skills; visual concentration and manual dexterity to operate radio, phone and complete required paperwork. The employee may be required to attend extracurricular activities; travel between sites; and work effectively and communicate with groups and individuals of all ages in a multi-cultural community.
