Job Summary
Under general supervision the Community Services Specialist (CSS) responds to non-hazardous, non-emergent, low-level property crimes, such as vandalism, petty theft, burglary and auto burglary; calls related to non-emergency circumstances or general assistance and non-hazardous, non-injury traffic accidents. Prepare written and electronic reports, including traffic accident reports/diagrams and property crime reports. Work closely with the public and University units to identify and solve community problems. Make presentations to community members and groups. Patrol a specified area on foot, bicycle, or in a CSS patrol vehicle. Under direct supervision of a sworn officer, may assist with interviewing witnesses to certain crimes as determined by the patrol sergeant. Execute assigned duties pursuant to University and Department policy and procedures. The Community Service Specialist (CSS) classification is a key component of UCDPD's holistic, tiered approach to providing service and safeguarding the community.

Department Overview
The CSS is part of the UCOP Police Reform task force recommendation - to have a tiered, holistic response to calls for service. This is a fundamental shift to have a CSS respond to calls for service that traditionally a police officer responds to - except emergencies, acts of violence (weapon), active crime scenes or known suspect. The CSS does not carry a firearm.
