Position Title: Campus Security Officer Department: Campus Safety & Security Reports To: Campus Security Supervisor / Director of Campus Safety & Security Institution: William Jewell College Classification: Full-Time, 10-Month Assignment (Benefits Eligible) Position SummaryThe Campus Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors at William Jewell College. Through proactive patrol, emergency response, community engagement, and exceptional customer service, the Campus Security Officer supports the College's educational mission while promoting a culture of safety, professionalism, and respect.
Officers are expected to exercise sound judgment, demonstrate professionalism in all interactions, and respond appropriately to a wide variety of situations ranging from routine service requests to emergency incidents. Officers are responsible for enforcing College policies, protecting life and property, documenting incidents, and working collaboratively with campus partners and local emergency responders. Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct proactive foot and vehicle patrols of campus buildings, residence halls, parking lots, and surrounding property.
- Respond to calls for service, emergency incidents, alarms, and requests for assistance while providing a professional and customer-focused response.
- Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors by providing information, escorts, unlocks, motorist assistance, and other safety-related services.
- Prepare accurate, timely, and complete reports documenting incidents, investigations, and daily activities.
- Enforce College policies and regulations while utilizing communication, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques.
- Coordinate with Liberty Police, Fire Department, EMS, and other public safety agencies during emergency incidents.
- Support campus emergency management operations, including emergency notifications, evacuations, severe weather response, and other critical incidents.
- Identify and report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, and security vulnerabilities affecting campus operations.
- Assist with security planning and staffing for special events, athletic contests, commencement, orientation, and other College functions.
- Maintain proficiency with department-issued equipment and successfully complete all required annual training and firearms qualification standards.
- Represent William Jewell College and the Campus Safety & Security Department in a professional manner consistent with the College's mission and values.
- Conduct routine inspections of assigned facilities and report deficiencies involving physical security, fire protection, life safety equipment, and other safety hazards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of five (5) years of sworn law enforcement or full-time campus public safety experience required.
- Ability to lawfully possess and carry a firearm while performing assigned duties.
- Valid Missouri driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain professionalism in stressful or rapidly evolving situations.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to successfully complete required annual firearms qualifications, defensive tactics training, CPR/AED and First Aid certification, and other required departmental training.
- Ability to work a rotating 12-hour Pitman (2-2-3) schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Preferred Qualifications- Missouri POST certification (current or previously held).
- Experience working in higher education, campus safety, or community-oriented policing.
- Experience with emergency management, incident command, or Clery Act compliance.
- De-escalation or Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Position DetailsEmployment Type: Full-Time Work Schedule: Rotating 12-hour Pitman (2-2-3) schedule; day and night assignments available. Assignment: Ten-month appointment with summer operational break. Position remains benefits eligible in accordance with College policy.
