Job Description
General Purpose of Job:
An Associate Pharmacy Technician shall perform activities related to the receiving, storing, packaging, preparation, compounding, recording, processing, dispensing, labeling, and delivery of medications or pharmaceutical supplies under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. May be promoted to Intermediate or Senior Pharmacy Technician after successful completion of promotion criteria. (see attached career ladder).
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Team members may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Assists the Pharmacist in providing effective and safe pharmaceutical services. Prepares and compounds medications for pharmacist approval to ensure accurate and timely delivery of medications for both inpatient and outpatient administration.
- Supports the IV admixture service by ensuring that all IV solutions are prepared and delivered to the correct units in a timely manner; prepares STAT and new orders immediately; assists in labeling premixed solutions and piggyback medications. Responsible for keeping the sterile compounding areas clean and well stocked per department policies and procedures.
- Prepare and handle IV and sterile compounded medications in compliance with USP <797> and <800> guidelines.
- Prepare and handle nonsterile compounded medications in compliance with USP <795> and <800> guidelines.
- Prepares, delivers, restocks and helps maintain the automated drug dispensing system. Delivers and documents the distribution of controlled substances to the patient care areas under the supervision of the pharmacists.
- Orders and receives medications and pharmaceutical supplies from wholesalers in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; conducts follow-up with vendors as necessary.
- Maintain and manage inventory, including restocking medications/supplies and checking expiration dates to facilitate the processing of medication orders, stock requests and restocking of carts/kits.
- Organizes outdated, recalled or overstocked medications to ship back for credit.
- Re-packages medications into unit dose containers.
- Audits inpatient and outpatient medication storage areas (ie provider offices) for safe medication storage practices.
- Transports prescription medications and other healthcare supplies to patient care areas.
- Attends meetings and various in-service programs as required.
- Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization's policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
- Communicates effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Completes all duties under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
General Requirements • Michigan State Pharmacy Technician License in good standing Work Experience • Pharmacy Technician experience, preferred. Education • High school diploma or equivalent Specialized Knowledge and Skills • General knowledge of pharmacy terms • Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of services including HIPAA confidentiality and TJC accreditation • Typing and computer skills necessary to accurately data enter information • Mathematical/computation skills • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate, orally and in written form, with all levels of staff in the exchange of information • Mental ability to work on tasks requiring accuracy and attention to detail, and adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands • Additional coursework in math, medical terminology, pharmacy or related areas, preferred.
