Job Summary
The Cardiac Cath Lab Technician II supports diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures by monitoring patients, assisting physicians, preparing equipment and supplies, and responding appropriately to cardiac emergencies. Demonstrates strong knowledge of cardiac, vascular, respiratory, and renal physiology, ECG interpretation, cardiac medications, hemodynamics, and cath lab technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor patients throughout diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures.
- Recognize and respond to ECG changes, lethal arrhythmias, myocardial infarctions, and cardiac emergencies using ACLS standards.
- Identify coronary anatomy, cardiac pressure waveforms, and relevant ECG abnormalities.
- Calculate basic hemodynamic parameters and perform cardiac outputs, oxygen saturation, and ACT measurements.
- Prepare sterile procedure tables, equipment, medications, and supplies for cardiac catheterization procedures.
- Assist with PTCA, atherectomy, thrombolytic therapy, and other interventional procedures.
- Operate and utilize cath lab fluoroscopy and imaging equipment to support physician visibility during procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of extraction and revascularization devices, including AngioJet, Rotablator, and laser systems.
- Assist with electrophysiology procedures, pacemaker implantation, therapeutic ablation, and ICD procedures.
- Recognize abnormal laboratory values, including ABGs, electrolytes, hemoglobin, BUN, and creatinine, and communicate concerns to physicians.
- Maintain accurate documentation of medications, catheterization events, procedures, and patient care.
- Assist with orientation and training of Cath Lab staff and participate in special projects or committees.
- Maintain a sterile environment and follow all patient safety, infection control, and medical ethics standards.
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Allied Health program such as Cardiovascular Technology, Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Exercise Science, Cardiac/Vascular Sonography, or equivalent.
- Current RCIS, RCES, ARRT (CI/VI), or equivalent applicable credential.
- BCLS certification required.
- ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire.
- Strong knowledge of ECG interpretation, cardiac medications, cardiac pathology, hemodynamics, and interventional cardiac procedures.
- Ability to scrub in a sterile environment for extended periods and wear lead protection.
- Ability to assist with transferring and transporting patients and equipment safely.
- Strong communication, teamwork, initiative, and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab or interventional cardiology setting.
- Experience with diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures.
- Experience with PTCA, atherectomy, thrombectomy, and revascularization devices.
- Familiarity with electrophysiology procedures, pacemakers, ablations, and ICDs.
- Experience with hemodynamic monitoring, ECG interpretation, and cath lab fluoroscopy systems.
- Previous experience training or mentoring Cath Lab staff.
Required Certification & Licensure
- Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES), or Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) with Cardiac Interventional (CI) or Vascular Interventional (VI) certification.
- BCLS certification required.
- ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire.
Working Conditions
Position may be based in a hospital or ambulatory/mobile imaging setting. Exposure to radiation, high-voltage equipment, and infectious diseases is possible with appropriate safety precautions. Position may require assisting with patient transfers and moving equipment.
