## Job Summary
The Cardiac Sonographer performs echocardiography tests and procedures in accordance with American Society of Echocardiography standards. Key responsibilities include:
- Patient Preparation: Explaining procedures, transferring patients to the ultrasound table, applying gel, and positioning patients properly.
- Imaging: Operating ultrasound equipment to produce and record images of the motion, shape, and composition of blood, organs, tissues, or bodily masses (e.g., fluid accumulations).
- Reporting: Performing the echocardiogram and providing oral and/or written preliminary summaries of technical findings to the interpreting physician for medical diagnosis.
- Equipment & Technology: Thoroughly understanding ultrasound machine operations and utilizing new sonographic technologies when needed.
- Versatility: Performing routine cardiac ultrasound procedures in clinics, hospitals, and mobile sites depending on location.
- Collaboration: Interacting professionally and effectively with fellow healthcare professionals.
- Accreditation: Assisting in the submission and/or maintenance of Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation when necessary.
- Training: Supervising or training students and cardiac sonographers as needed.
- Compliance: Adhering to Sanford safety and infection control policies, as well as internal standards and procedures abstracted from HIPAA.
- Expanded Duties: Depending on the facility, responsibilities may expand to include general ultrasonography.

## Qualifications & Requirements
### Education & Experience by State
- South Dakota:
- Graduate from an accredited two-year Cardiac Ultrasound Program.
- North Dakota:
- Graduate from an accredited school of cardiac sonography program OR one year of work experience in cardiac sonography (preferred).
- Note: On-the-job training may be considered with appropriate leadership approval if the candidate has an allied health certificate/diploma in an imaging modality.
- Minnesota:
- Graduate from an accredited two-year Cardiac Ultrasound Program OR a Bachelors degree and one year of equivalent work experience.
- All Other States:
- Minimum of one year of equivalent work experience OR an allied health certificate/diploma.
### Certifications & Licensure
- South Dakota:
- ARDMS, CCI, or registry eligible required within 12 months of hire.
- Note: Leadership may require this sooner based on department needs.
- All Other States:
- ARRT, ARDMS, or CCI (or registry eligible) required within 18 months of hire.
- Note: Leadership may extend this timeframe based on department needs.
- North Dakota Specific:
- Licensure through the North Dakota Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (NDMIRT) Board is required if performing medical imaging or radiation therapy procedures.
- General Requirements:
- Drivers License: Required for employees providing outreach/mobile services (must maintain a valid license and good driving record; may include passenger flights and overnight stays).
- BLS Certification: Basic Life Support certification required within six weeks of employment and re-certified as necessary.
