Mission or Goal of Unit: Themission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’smost advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracicservices, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’sfuture cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasinglymandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracicsurgery. The division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty staffand students.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a cardiothoracic surgeon who will fulfill several urgent needs of this division. Duties willinclude clinical responsibilities in all areas of advanced thoracic &foregut surgery. Opportunity to utilize specific expertise in minimally invasive thoracic surgery,surgery for esophageal diseases as well as advanced endoscopy.

Position Responsibilities: 

Clinical | Faculty member will provide high quality cardiothoracic surgical care for patients in all areas of advance thoracic and foregut surgeryClinical responsibilities may include shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.

Teaching | Faculty member will have teachingresponsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery CT surgery residents, generalsurgery residents as well as medical and undergraduate students.

Research | Clinical research will be stronglyencouraged.  Opportunities for intramuraland extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramuralfunding.  Collaboration with basicscience faculty in School of Medicine will be encouraged.  

Service | Faculty member will serve on departmental,College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in aprofessional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer,etc. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Board certified/eligible in Thoracic Surgery
  • Virginia state licensure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Research interests in Cardiothoracic disorders that can lead to intramural and extramural funding
  • Training in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic/esophageal surgery 
  • Established record of external funding
