Description

The specialist will provide continuous, comprehensive care to adult and geriatric patients in invasive cardiology and peripheral angiography. This role requires utilizing specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills in compliance with care standards and customer service standards. The professional will perform angiographic procedures, including invasive vascular treatments and examinations, ensuring optimal image quality. Care is provided based on a model that promotes an ongoing partnership between patients, families, and healthcare providers, ensuring it is culturally based and age-specific.

Job Responsibilities

  • Identify signs, symptoms, and data related to the patient's presenting needs.
  • Report pertinent abnormal data and changes in the patient's condition to the physician and charge RN.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare team members to communicate pertinent data regarding patient's physiological and psychological data using appropriate handoff methods.
  • Assess patient, family, and environment for safety risks and proactively perform safety initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing, individualized holistic patient and family education based on needs with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking upon review of physician orders, making appropriate referrals, and contacting other health team professionals.
  • Respond to emergency situations requiring immediate, controlled precision in a skillful manner.
  • Implement measures to prevent contamination and/or transmission of disease, including using appropriate protective devices and equipment to maintain a safe environment.
  • Function as a scrub assistant to the cardiologist/radiologist using the principles of sterile technique and aid in the technical performance of diagnostic/interventional procedures in the cath lab and angiography.
  • Set up sterile trays and all specialized equipment according to the procedure being performed.
  • Maintain hemostasis of a vessel post-procedure using a compression device, closure device, or manual compression. Recognize potential problems associated with insertion sites and take corrective actions if indicated.
  • Maintain competency on arterial and venous sheath removal techniques and groin management.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of department policies regarding radiation safety while using x-ray equipment.
  • Provide proper radiation protection for patients, self, and others (using lead aprons, lead gloves, and gonadal shielding when appropriate).
  • Properly screen all females of childbearing age for possible pregnancy.
  • Properly wear radiation dosimetry badges, exchange badges each month, and review/sign monthly dosimetry reports.

Skills

Required Skills & Experience

  • 1-2 years of previous experience in the field.
  • Good understanding of cardiovascular and peripheral anatomy to support learning stimulator role during complex ablations.
  • Responsible for meeting individual education and training requirements.
  • Participate in on-call coverage as job requires.
  • Possess a high level of professionalism and the ability to establish good relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Able to perform duties with minimal supervision.

Education

Required Education

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Radiological Technology.

Required Certifications & Licensure

  • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT(R)).
  • Valid state Radiologic License.
  • BLS (American Heart Association).
  • ACLS (American Heart Association) within one year of hire.
