Job Description

Career Counselor

The Hendrix College Office of Career Success is seeking a full-time, 12-month team member to serve as a Career Counselor and to help launch Via Hendrix, the College's new strategy that embeds career preparation, including a required full-time, full semester work experience-a co-op, throughout the liberal arts curriculum. Beginning with the fall 2026 incoming class, every Hendrix student receives an integrated advising team that provides academic and professional support through graduation: a faculty academic advisor, a career counselor, and-for student-athletes-their coach. The individual in this position reports to the Executive Director of Career Success and works closely with fellow advising team members to create a transformative experience for students. Guiding students from first-year discernment through career preparation and connection, the individual in this role will help students link the classroom with the world by connecting what they study to "lead lives of accomplishment, integrity, service, and joy."

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Building rapport and trust with an assigned caseload of students and guiding them through individual and group sessions across the full Via Hendrix arc: first-year discernment and exploration, second-year fundamentals in professionalism, third-year co-op experience, and fourth-year reflection for jobs or graduate school.
  • Coordinating closely with each student's advising team to deliver an integrated advising experience, including shared notes and aligned guidance.
  • Teaching a new required course, COOP 295 - Co-op Foundations, which is designed to equip second-year students with the foundational skills necessary to be successful in their co-op as well as their professional life after Hendrix.
  • Helping students recognize and articulate the career-readiness competencies their liberal arts education builds; helping students connect those strengths to their goals for career and vocation.
  • Developing and delivering career programming (e.g., workshops, panels, classroom presentations) to support students at each stage of their development.
  • Supporting students' use of career assessments and resources to inform decision-making.
  • Maintaining accurate advising records and contributing to program assessment and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborating with other College departments, including the Office of Advising and Academic Success, Admission, Alumni Engagement, Athletics, Financial Aid, and the Registrar's office.
  • Presenting information to students, parents, faculty, and employer partners.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND

Education: Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, college student personnel, or a related field preferred.

Experience: Experience in career advising, coaching, mentoring, teaching, recruiting, or student support preferred. Professional certification in career coaching or assessment instruments is a plus.

Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build rapport with students across diverse backgrounds; self-motivated team player with an ability to manage multifaceted projects; comfort working with data and technology platforms; respectful of student privacy and confidential information.

Consideration of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applications should include a letter of application and a resume with contact information for three professional references. The annual salary for this position is $49,000. Applications can be submitted at www.hendrix.edu/jobs. Questions about this position can be submitted to hr@hendrix.edu.
