As a Career Counselor in the Career & Internship Center, you will provide individualized coaching, career exploration guidance, and professional development support that empowers students to make informed decisions about their education, careers, and future opportunities. Beyond one-on-one advising, this position plays an active role in shaping innovative career development programs, services, and initiatives that enhance student engagement and workforce readiness. Working collaboratively with campus partners and Career & Internship Center staff, you will help design, implement, and evaluate programs that connect students with valuable resources, experiential learning opportunities, internships, and employment pathways. This role provides the rewarding opportunity to combine counseling, program development, education, and leadership while contributing to UVUs mission of student success, community engagement, and lifelong learning.
Summary of Responsibilities
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a masters degree in Counseling & Guidance, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or a related Social Science field and two years of full-time professional employment related to the summary of duties; consideration given to those currently in a master's program; or a bachelors degree and 4 years of experience related to the summary of duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience using client relationship management (CRM) software or career services software such as Handshake, Simplicity, or Grad Leaders.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
Knowledge of career counseling theory and practices.
Knowledge of college/university culture and job placement methodology.
Knowledge of current social, economic, and employment conditions and trends.
Knowledge of employer staffing practices, needs, and recruitment.
Knowledge of research and analysis methods and report writing and maintaining databases.
Basic Knowledge of project management practices.
Skills
Public speaking and group presentation skills are essential.
Sound interpersonal skills with a friendly and positive demeanor, with superior customer service skills.
Skills and technological competence using various applications to conduct work, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
Student-centered, combined with impeccable teamwork skills.
Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written communications, as well as using electronic media and graphic presentation tools.
Ability to design workflow models, processes, and systems.
Ability to work collaboratively and establish positive relationships and to supervise and mentor staff and paraprofessionals if assigned.

Utah Valley University was established in 1941 as Central Utah Vocational School (CUVS) with the primary function of providing war production training. CUVS was part of the Provo School District located in south Provo. The institution received a state appropriation in March 1945 of $50,000 to operate for the 1945-1947 biennium. In 1947, the school received funding as a permanent state institution. A new site for the school was acquired on University Avenue in Provo in 1948; in the 1952, the state appropriated funding for the first construction on that site. As enrollments grew, the state acquired over 185 acres in southwest Orem and the first building was completed in 1977. Today, the University’s facilities consist of a combined total of 412 acres with 50 buildings with campuses in Orem, Provo, and Heber City and property in Vineyard and at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi.
