CARPENTER

HOURS: Full-Time (37.50 hrs per week). Must be able to work flexible and/or additional hours as mandated by library operational needs.

BARGAINING UNIT: SEIU / Pay Grade: G = $24.0466

LOCATION: Main Library

JOB SUMMARY:Construct, erect, install and repair structures and fixtures for the Library using a variety of tools common to the carpentry trade.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or its equivalent.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Four years’ carpentry experience in a commercial environment.
  • One-year vocational coursework in a related field preferred.

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Driver License: Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Other License: Tow motor operator certificate preferred.  Journeyman carpenter certification or equivalent experience preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Evaluation of this position is based primarily on the performance of the following essential functions, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Renovate offices and construct new additions.
  • Engineer new partitions, additions, and storage areas including wood and metal stud walls, drywall installation and finishing and windows.
  • Repair wall, roofs, windows, doors, furniture, and other fixtures.
  • Install and repair flooring including carpet, vinyl, ceramic tile, resilient flooring and poured finishes.
  • Restore old and antique furniture.
  • Construct walls, ceilings, cabinets, shelves, doors, door frames, and other fixtures.
  • Demolish walls and partitions and shelving.
  • Repair concrete.  Install and maintain concrete pavers.
  • Install and maintain locks and related hardware.
  • Install signage and other fixtures.
  • Inspect and make minor repairs to roofs, drainage and building envelope systems.
  • Respond to emergency requests.
  • Erect and safely utilize scaffolding, ladders, lifts or swings.
  • Clean and properly care for materials and tools utilized throughout the day, and work area.
  • Develop schedules, scope of work, and cost estimates for various projects including equipment/materials lists and associated costs.
  • Operate motor vehicle for snow plowing and salting as needed.
  • Identify needed supplies, tools, equipment, and initiate orders.
  • Ensure a safe work environment is created and maintained.
  • May attend meetings, participate in committees, and provide basic training.
  • May perform select duties of other staff in their absence.

 

Performs other duties as required.

 

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:

  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials and tools of the carpentry trade.
  • Knowledge of various construction materials and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations.
  • Knowledge of construction standards, practices, and terminology.
  • Ability to manage multiple departmental projects as well as smaller, short-term projects on a concurrent basis.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various tools and equipment.
  • Spatial relations skills.
  • Knowledge of business mathematics and business English including spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to adapt to new and updated software and procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills including use of MS Windows, word processing, spreadsheet processing and electronic communication.
  • Ability to maintain insurable driving status per the standards of the Library's fleet insurance carrier.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to input and extract data from a computer throughout the day.
  • Ability to work with a variety of construction and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work in dust, dirt, and fumes.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability to work from scaffolding, ladders, and roofs.
  • Ability to work with moving parts and machinery.
  • Ability to move objects up to 80 lbs. throughout the day.
  • Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks
  • Perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, on a continuous basis for up to an eight-hour shift.
