About this Job

This is a full-time position located at the State Museum in New Orleans, LA.

The Carpenter Foreman is responsible for the supervision and oversight of scheduling, reviewing, installing, repairing, and maintaining all carpentry tasks as related to the Louisiana State Museum system including the following: Cabildo, Creole House, Jackson House, Arsenal, Presbytere, Madame Johns Legacy, Collection Facility, Lower Pontalba including all commercial and residential spaces, 1850 House, and the Old U.S. Mint all located in New Orleans. Also included are: E.D. White House in Thibodaux, Wedell Williams Aviation and Cypress Sawmill Museum in Patterson, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Regional History Museum in Natchitoches, and the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:

Four years of experience or training in the carpentry trade.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Review, evaluate, and prioritize incoming work orders on a daily basis.
  • Participate, assign, inspect, and supervise all repairs, alterations/renovations, installations, and maintenance of all carpentry (wood) related tasks necessary to maintain the buildings in the Louisiana State Museum system.
  • Determines tools and equipment needed to accomplish successful completion of job/project.
  • Assists in determining costs of material, construction needs, and scheduling of timeline related to job/project.
  • Assists the Facility Maintenance Manager and/or the Assistant Facility Maintenance Manager with oversight and supervision of Laborers and Trade Helpers as needed per job/project specification, requirement, and timeline.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints corresponding to projects/jobs.
  • Supervises and assign duties to Master Carpenters who perform journeyman level carpentry work.
  • Evaluate work performance, complete planning and review with subordinates in accordance with department CPM requirements.
  • Authorizes leave and keep subordinates apprised of changes/additions to agency policies and procedures.
  • Advise Assistant and/or Facility Maintenance Manager of any preventative maintenance or repairs, including any emergency repairs, needed throughout the Louisiana State Museum system.
  • Advises Assistant and/or Facility Maintenance Manager of any supplies/equipment needed for inventory stock, special projects, and jobs.
  • Assists in maintaining of the Louisiana State Museum preventative maintenance and safety programs.
  • Consults with Curatorial staff in designing, fabricating, and installing upcoming exhibits, casework, etc.
  • All other duties as determined by supervisor.

Position-Specific Details:

  • Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment. Current permanent status state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
  • Work Schedule: This is a full-time position that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime. This position may be required to travel.
