POSITION TITLE: Carpenter II

AGENCY: University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

SALARY: Grade 18

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Carpenter II plans, supervises, and performs skilled carpentry work associated with the construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance of university facilities and infrastructure. The incumbent oversees assigned personnel and resources to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of carpentry services in support of campus operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Incumbents of positions at this level receive general supervision from employees of higher grade who provide procedural guidance, assign work and review performance through inspection and verbal reports for quality and compliance with standard procedures.

DIRECT REPORTING STAFF:

Incumbents of positions at this level exercise direct supervision (i.e., not through an intermediate level supervisor) over, assign work to and review the performance of 1-5 skilled tradesmen.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Carpentry Operations & Facilities Maintenance

  • Supervises and participates in the construction and repair of buildings and all wooden structures, formwork for concrete placements, doors and hardware (excluding locksmith work), steel stud walls, ceilings, suspended ceilings, plastic laminate installation, and glass installations
  • Supervises and performs the erection, inspection, maintenance, and safe use of staging, rigging, scaffolding, and related access equipment necessary to perform carpentry work
  • Reviews construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications
  • Operates, inspects, cleans, and maintains hand tools, power tools, stationary woodworking equipment, pneumatic tools, air compressors, and other carpentry equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety requirements
  • Supervises and performs skilled bench work by using stationary woodworking equipment, including table saws, jointers, planers, lathes, sanders, drill presses, mortisers, and other specialized carpentry equipment
  • Inspects buildings to ensure carpentry repairs and maintenance activities meet quality standards, applicable codes, and departmental expectations for workmanship and timeliness
  • Maintains logs and records of completed and outstanding work and reports all activity for inclusion in the facilities work order database
  • Develops, schedules, and performs preventive maintenance activities for building components and carpentry-related systems to maximize facility life and minimize unplanned repairs
  • Performs related duties such as preparing various reports, maintaining records and files, setting up signs and barricades, reading instructions on layouts, removing and placing glass, and moving office furniture, as needed, to do carpentry work safely and efficiently
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for carpentry work requests by communicating project status, coordinating schedules, resolving operational issues, and minimizing disruptions to campus operations
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies involving building damage or carpentry-related issues
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations, Massachusetts Building Code, fire and life safety requirements, and University safety procedures including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Project Coordination & Resource Management

  • Prepares estimates for labor, materials, equipment, project duration, and staffing requirements for maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction projects
  • Coordinates with supervisors, department representatives, contractors, and other Facilities personnel to prioritize work, respond to emergencies, evaluate project feasibility, and schedule carpentry work
  • Coordinates carpentry work with other skilled trades to support renovation and capital projects
  • Monitors contractor work for quality and compliance with project specifications when applicable
  • Recommends and procures approved materials, equipment, tools, and rentals; verifies deliveries, and reviews vendor invoices for accuracy prior to payment approval
  • Maintains inventory of shop materials, tools, and equipment

Supervision and Staff Coordination

  • Supervises assigned personnel by scheduling work, approving leave, maintaining attendance and overtime records, assigning overtime in accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreements, and monitoring productivity
  • Trains, mentors, and evaluates assigned personnel in carpentry techniques, equipment operation, safety procedures, and applicable codes and regulations
  • Orients new employees as required
  • Supports and administers university policy regarding affirmative action, equal employment opportunity, safe work practices, hazardous materials handling, discriminatory harassment, substance abuse, and/or other university policy or legal issues

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of carpentry
  • Knowledge of the types of building structures
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of material used in carpentry
  • Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in carpentry
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of safety equipment used in carpentry
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small handheld tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, chisels, drills, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of tools used in carpentry benchwork
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small measurement devices such as calipers, levels, rulers, steel squares, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of handheld power tools such as power saws, power drills, power hammers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of wood
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of safety and/or climbing equipment such as scaffolds, ladders, rigging, etc.
  • Skill in using small hand tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, chisels, drills, etc.
  • Skill in using small measurement devices such as calipers, levels, rules, steel squares, gauges, etc.
  • Skill in using handheld power tools such as saws, drills, power hammers, etc.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, blueprints, drawings, etc.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
  • Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner
  • Physical stamina and endurance
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic review and/or evaluations; determining subordinates training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON THE JOB:

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, vocational or vocational school at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking, or cabinetmaking may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Possession of a Massachusetts Construction Supervisors License (CSL)

REMARKS: Carpenters work independently; work out of doors in all types of weather; work on scaffolding and/or ladders at heights greater than 10 feet; are exposed to the hazards of sharp tools and running machinery; lift and carry heavy objects; stand for prolonged periods of time; may work varied shifts, weekends, holidays or nights and may be subject to standby (on call) work status.
