Position Description

The Carpenter is a full-time Civil Service position in the Metro Parks and Recreation department. The primary duties of this position consist of performing skilled carpentry work building, maintaining, altering, and repairing buildings, furniture, and other related items

This position may be required to work after hours and/or weekends. May be required to work after weather related events to repair damage to facilities, structures or bridges that are essential for Metro Parks operational needs.

Metro's Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County. Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 184 parks and 107 miles of greenway. Metro Parks offers after school programs for children, activities for seniors (55+), cultural arts classes, dog parks, fitness classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, art galleries, and much more. It is the mission of Metro Parks and Recreation to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Davidson County with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness and quality of life through recreation, conservation and community. Typical Duties

  • Performs skilled work on wooden and related structures.
  • Replaces and repairs doors, frames, and locks.
  • Installs window and door glass.
  • Builds and repairs furniture, cabinets, and signage.
  • Repairs and replaces various roof and roof components.
  • Repairs and replaces floors, walls, and decking.
  • Installs tile.
  • Constructs sub-floors, rafters, and wall frames for new and existing structures.
  • Installs insulation and wall coverings.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications.
  • Operates Metro Vehicles required to complete the assigned task.
  • Draws rough sketches of projects as needed.
  • All other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Eighth grade education and one (1) year of general carpentry experience.

LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid Driver License

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of current Building Codes and ADA requirements
  • Experience performing skilled work on wood and related structures
  • Experience repairing and/or replacing doors, frames, and locks
  • Experience repairing and/or replacing roofs, floors, and walls
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints
  • Experience constructing sub-floors, rafters, and wall frames for new and existing structures
  • Experience operating machinery such as table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, planer, jointer, and router
