Job Description

The Recruitment & Training Coordinator connects passionate people with meaningful opportunities to advocate for children. From recruiting and training new CASA volunteers to building community partnerships, this role plays a key part in ensuring every child has access to a well-prepared advocate. An important priority is reaching underrepresented communities and growing a volunteer base that reflects the children and families we serve.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Respond to volunteer inquiries, conduct Information Sessions, and recruit, interview, and select qualified volunteer applicants.
  • Coordinate the volunteer onboarding process, including applications, interviews, background checks, and intake materials.
  • Plan and oversee pre-service training and coordinate ongoing in-service training with the Program Coordinator.
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and ongoing support to assigned volunteer advocates, including reviewing court reports and making volunteer assignments for court-appointed cases.
  • Attend court hearings, treatment team meetings, family partnership meetings, and other case-related activities as needed to support volunteer advocates.
  • Serve as a liaison with the courts, Court Service Unit, Department of Social Services, City Attorney, and other community partners to ensure effective advocacy for children served by CASA.
  • Promote Chesapeake CASA through community outreach, presentations, correspondence, and recruitment communications.
  • Maintain court schedules, program records, statistical data, and documentation, and assist with state and federal grant reporting.
  • Investigate and respond to concerns or complaints from clients, families, judicial personnel, volunteers, and members of the public.
  • Stay current on developments in child welfare, juvenile justice, and social work, and perform other duties as assigned to support the Chesapeake CASA program.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires a bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience in business administration, public administration, or social work with class work in behavioral sciences or closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Also requires CPR and First Aid Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience as a CASA or participation in CASA training;

  2. Experience or training as an educator;

  3. Experience in volunteer recruitment and management;

  4. Knowledge and understanding of issues and dynamics within families relating to child abuse and neglect; knowledge of child development; knowledge of the impact of trauma on children, youth and adults; and,

  5. Knowledge of the child welfare, education and/or court systems.
