Work with a purpose! Management & Training Corporation (MTC) operates the Otero County Prison in Chaparral, New Mexico. We provide a safe and secure working environment for our staff while helping those in our custody prepare for success upon release.

Position Summary:

Reports to the supervisor, case management. Responsible for planning, coordinating, developing and implementing a professional individual and group counseling program for assigned inmates in compliance with MTC) and customer directives.

Essential Functions:

  1. Review detailed background file, conduct personal interviews and test as necessary to analyze and recommend a program for each assigned inmate.

  2. Initiate and maintain individual personal social development (PSD) folder on each assigned inmate.

  3. Provide direct aid and counseling to inmates/detainees with personal needs or problems, i.e., sickness, injury, family problems and other related personal problems.

  4. Provide continuous educational, vocational, personal and social adjustment counseling on an individual and group basis. Recommend necessary program modifications throughout each assigned inmate's stay.

  5. Recommend and provide continuous programs (educational, vocational, and cognitive) while making necessary recommendations throughout their sentence.

  6. Conduct continuous interpretation and evaluation of progress in inmate's specific development program. Maintain documentation and records.

  7. Recommend and conduct training sessions to develop greater proficiency among staff in areas of guidance and social adjustment.

  8. Recommend medical or psychiatric evaluation for emotional or psychological problems.

  9. Assist in the evaluation of facility services for inmates and recommend modifications for improvement.

  10. Rack good time credits as mandated by NMCD.

  11. Coordinate victim notifications to coincide with inmates' releases.

  12. Register, monitor, and apply Global Positioning System (GPS) units before an offender''s release.

  13. Coordinate with the Adult Parole Board and the New Mexico probation and parole to arrange inmates'' releases.

  14. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.

  15. Maintain accountability of staff, students and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned within his/her scope of work as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Associate's degree in counseling or related field required and one (1) year related experience preferred. 90 credits hours from an accredited college or university, in a related field, will be considered in lieu of an Associate's degree. Four (4) years of correctional experience may be considered in lieu of education. Valid driver's license in the state of New Mexico or the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Post Hire Qualifications and Training Requirements:

Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements maintain appropriate facility clearance.
