Summary/Objective

The New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) ReStore sells donated building materials and home furnishings to the public at discount prices. Its inventory comes from many sources: individuals, corporations, and other partner organizations. Proceeds from ReStore sales support NOAHH’s work serving families in the Greater New Orleans area.

The ReStore Cashier is responsible for providing excellent customer service while accurately and efficiently processing customer transactions. This position serves as a primary point of contact for customers and assists with maintaining an organized, welcoming, and professional retail environment.


Essential Functions

Describe the key duties and responsibilities of the position below:

  • Greet customers in a professional, courteous, and friendly manner.
  • Accurately process cash, credit/debit card, and other approved payment transactions.
  • Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system and issue customer receipts.
  • Maintain an accurate cash drawer and follow established cash-handling procedures.
  • Count the cash drawer at the beginning and/or end of assigned shifts as required.
  • Assist customers with questions regarding merchandise, pricing, store policies, and procedures.
  • Answer telephone calls and direct customer inquiries appropriately.
  • Provide excellent customer service and assist in resolving routine customer concerns.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional checkout area.
  • Assist with pricing, tagging, merchandising, and organizing merchandise as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with ReStore team members regarding customer needs, pricing questions, and merchandise.
  • Maintain good working relationships with coworkers and volunteers.
  • Assist and interact professionally with ReStore volunteers.
  • Report cash discrepancies, customer concerns, suspected theft, safety issues, or other unusual situations to management.
  • Assist with opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Flexibility with workdays and work hours may be required.
  • Required Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

    • Successful completion of on-the-job training.

    • Retail merchandising experience preferred.

    Physical Demands

    Work is performed primarily in a retail/warehouse environment. The position requires considerable standing and walking throughout the workday and may require bending, reaching, stooping, and occasional lifting or moving of merchandise. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position safely.
