    Overview

    The Catalog-Metadata Librarian brings cataloging and metadata expertise to the management of the Library's catalogs and databases and provides intellectual management for the Library's cataloged and described collections. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Medical Historical Librarian, the Catalog-Metadata Librarian creates new original records for Medical Historical Library materials lacking this level of description. These materials include, but are not limited to, books, manuscripts, broadsides and ephemera, and prints, posters, and drawings. The items date from the 16th-20th centuries and are written in a variety of Western languages. Working in OCLC and following Yale cataloging guidelines, the Catalog-Metadata Librarian imports the record into Alma, the backend system for the Library catalog, and adds any local notes and holdings information, including assigning call numbers. 


    1.    Provides original cataloging/creates metadata for materials in all formats and subject areas. 
    Applies descriptive standards (RDA, AACR2, DCRM, DACS, or VRC, etc.), structural standards 
    (MARC, MODS, METS or EAD, etc.), and controlled vocabularies (LCNAF, or LCSH, etc,). Creates 
    authority records applying standards and best practices and assigns call numbers using Library of Congress Classification and/or Medical Historical Library classification systems.

    2.    Provides intellectual and physical management of Alma and other library databases for cataloging. This may include authority control, record loading, ingesting objects, quality assurance processes, and working with stakeholders within the Medical Historical Library. 

    Required Skills and Abilities
    1. Demonstrated knowledge of current national cataloging/metadata and structural standards.

    2. Knowledge of subject analysis and classification systems.

    3. Experience with specialized cataloging for rare and special collections materials

    4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    5. Ability to work well in a team-based and self-directed work environment.
     

    Principal Responsibilities

    1. The Librarian 4 is expected to demonstrate excellence in meeting the position responsibilities, as defined by the job description and annual goals. 2. Demonstrate continued effectiveness in job performance through evidence of substantial knowledge, understanding, and skill in performing the duties of his or her position. 3. Demonstrate examples of leadership that enable the library to achieve its mission. 4. Become a recognized specialist or possess expert knowledge in a particular area of librarianship or subject area that makes her or him a resource person for other library staff. 5. Provide outstanding contributions to the library, university, and/or community. 6. Provide outstanding professional contributions at the regional, national, or international level. 7. Required Education and Experience Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited Library school and eight years of related experience. In selected instances, a post-graduate degree in a related discipline may be required or substituted for an MLS.
