Position Summary
The CDL Class A Driver is responsible for safely operating commercial vehicles, trailers, and combination vehicles while ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of fabricated steel and materials. The driver will work closely with shop personnel, project managers, field crews, and customers to coordinate deliveries and maintain compliance with all DOT, FMCSA, and company safety requirements.
This is a hands-on position that requires strong attention to detail, professionalism, reliability, and the ability to work safely in fabrication, yard, and construction environments.
Duties, Responsibilities, & Requirements
- Safely operate Class A commercial vehicles, trailers, and combination vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations and company policies
- Pull flatbed trailers, gooseneck trailers, equipment trailers, and other company trailers as required
- Safely back, maneuver, couple, and uncouple trailers in shop yards, customer sites, and construction environments
- Transport structural steel, fabricated components, materials, tools, and equipment to company locations and customer job sites
- Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and routine inspections of trucks, trailers, securement devices, tires, brakes, lights, and related equipment
- Properly secure loads using chains, binders, straps, tarps, and other approved cargo securement methods
- Inspect loads for stability, safety, and compliance prior to transport
- Verify shipping paperwork, delivery tickets, packing slips, and load accuracy
- Maintain accurate driver logs, inspection reports, fuel records, mileage records, and other required DOT documentation
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, customers, and field crews regarding delivery schedules and project needs
- Assist with loading, unloading, staging, and organizing materials as needed
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment when authorized
- Maintain cleanliness and routine care of assigned vehicles, trailers, and equipment
- Promptly report accidents, violations, maintenance issues, equipment damage, or safety concerns
- Follow all company safety procedures, PPE requirements, and safe driving practices
- Maintain professional appearance, conduct, and customer service while representing the company
- Safely navigate job sites, fabrication yards, construction zones, mountain roads, and varying weather and road conditions
- Work flexible hours, overtime, weekends, or overnight trips as project demands require
- Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, DOT, and FMCSA regulations
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and company-required certifications
Qualifications
- Valid Class A CDL license with acceptable driving record
- Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate
- Minimum of 2 years of CDL driving experience preferred
- Experience pulling and maneuvering trailers required
- Flatbed, steel hauling, and trailer hauling experience preferred
- Knowledge of DOT cargo securement requirements
- Ability to safely back and position trailers in tight work areas
- Ability to read maps, delivery instructions, and shipping documentation
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify equipment issues preferred
- Forklift certification or ability to become certified preferred
- Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, cranes, forklifts, and fabrication operations
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing schedules
- Ability to pass DOT drug testing and background screening requirements
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, and secure materials weighing up to 50 pounds regularly
- Ability to climb on trailers and equipment safely
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and securing loads
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
- Ability to sit and drive for extended periods
Schedule
- Full-time position
- Primarily local and regional routes
- Home most nights
- Occasional overnight travel to neighboring states
- Overtime and weekend work may be required based on workload
