The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an CDL Operator I, (Equipment Operator 1A) grade A13 position, in the Office of Highway Maintenance.

About the Position

This is skilled craftwork whereby incumbents are responsible for the safe and efficient operation and driving of light to heavy construction-based equipment. Incumbents perform manual tasks in connection with road construction, highway maintenance, and/or storm drain maintenance operations. Duties require initiative and independent judgment in the care and operation of equipment, as well as mechanical aptitude and skillful coordination of eye, hand and foot movements.

About the Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T's workforce keeps the County's various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Examples of Work

  • Operates light equipment such as street sweeper, bucket truck, chipper, street flusher, belt loader, sandblaster, rubber tire roller, compressor truck, rubber tire loader, mist/straw blower, stump remover, dump truck (6 wheel), and 20-yard packer;
  • Operates dump truck (single axle), crew cab dump truck (single axle), to transport personnel and materials to and from job sites, and assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment from vehicles;
  • Operates air compressor, five (5) ton rollers, asphalt curb machine, tractor mower, flail mower in connection with construction or maintenance projects;
  • Participates in work-site safety set-up, e.g., setting barricades and cones, prepping for excavation, assisting with utility locates and prepping for confined space entry; use traffic control techniques to control high/low-speed vehicular traffic movement; maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles for ensuring availability of equipment;
  • Maintains records and prepare reports through the completion of daily work logs and work order forms;
  • Checks vehicle daily to include interior/exterior cleaning duties, tires and air pressure, engine fluid/hydraulic fluid levels and adjusts levels to meet prescribed standards;
  • Performs pre and post-trip inspections to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition and assist crew members in performing semi-skilled tasks.
  • Assists with preventive maintenance;
  • Performs duties of a general laborer in maintenance and construction when not operating equipment;
  • Participates as an essential employee in the Departments Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities; and,
  • Performs other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employees class of work.
  • Ability to use a computer and apply relevant software applications.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a standard grade school course.
  • One (1) year experience operating light power equipment.
  • A valid Class A, Class B or equivalent commercial drivers license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities.
  • Candidate must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work.
  • Must have a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical exam.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid Class A commercial drivers license (CDL) with mandatory airbrake and tanker endorsements

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol test.
  • Random drug tests will be conducted upon employment.

General Plan Information:

The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.
