Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for two (2) permanent positions of Cement Finishers with Infrastructure Maintenance & Operations, Public Works, Sidewalks West.

This position encompasses a wide variety of skilled labour duties in numerous locations indoors and outdoors in various working conditions throughout the municipality. This position requires teamwork, flexibility, organizational skills, safety awareness and pride in delivering high-quality public service to benefit our citizens.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform a wide variety of skilled duties related to the maintenance and repair of municipal property;
  • Will be involved in repairing curbs and sidewalks including concrete finishing and asphalt repair work;
  • Will be involved in activities that involve noise, vibrations, dust and fumes;
  • Assist in traffic control as required;
  • Load and unload equipment and materials;
  • Maintain and safely operate assigned tools/equipment;
  • Work safely and cooperatively assisting other classifications;
  • Mandatory participation in Winter Works including shift work;
  • Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM;
  • Other duties as assigned within Infrastructure Maintenance and Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Up to three years related work experience;
  • Valid class 5 drivers license required
  • Must have a good working knowledge of concrete and its applications;

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Must have a good attendance and work record;
  • Working knowledge of methods, material and equipment usage involved in Municipal Operations;
  • Capable and willing to work inside and outside in varying weather conditions;
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team player;
  • Ability to follow instructions, and communicate effectively with coworkers, traffic control, and members of the public, including oral and written communication;
  • WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, Provincial Traffic Control Certification and Signage Course or ability to successfully complete;
  • Operation of equipment and tools in difficult conditions;
  • Work environment may include industry acceptable levels of dust, fumes, noise, etc.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

WORK STATUS: Two (2) Permanent, Full-time Positions

HOURS OF WORK: Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; 40 hours per week. Candidates must be able to work nights and weekends for Winter Works.

SALARY: $29.35 + $0.75 per hour as per the CUPE Local 108 Collective Agreement

WORK LOCATION: 3800 MacKintosh Street, Halifax, NS
