Summary/Objective

This role is responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, and administration of the cemetery. The Cemetery Manager oversees grounds care, interment services, customer service, and administrative operations, while providing strong leadership through hiring, performance management, and employee development. The Cemetery Manager may work with a Cemetery Superintendent or Supervisor to ensure the cemetery is maintained with dignity, safety, and compliance, delivering a respectful environment for families and visitors.

Essential Functions

  • Oversees daily cemetery operations, including burials, entombments, inurnments, and disinterment.
  • Ensures all grounds are maintained to high standards (landscaping, turf care, irrigation, roads, signage, and structures)
  • Develops and manages preventative maintenance and seasonal grounds plans
  • Monitors and maintains equipment, tools, and supplies; ensure proper usage and safety
  • Coordinates scheduling of services to ensure timely and accurate execution
  • Ensures cemetery property reflects a peaceful, dignified, and professional environment at all times
  • Manages cemetery records, lot ownership, mapping, and burial documentation with accuracy and compliance
  • Oversees administrative processes including contracts, permits, billing, and reporting
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations governing cemetery operations
  • Monitors budgets, expenses, and revenue; identify cost controls and efficiency improvements
  • Prepares operational reports and provide updates to leadership
  • Ensure high-quality, compassionate service to families, visitors, and stakeholders
  • Addresses and resolves customer concerns or complaints professionally and promptly
  • Collaborates with funeral homes, clergy, and service providers to ensure seamless services
  • Maintains clear communication with families regarding services, timelines, and policies
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and onboards cemetery staff, including grounds and administrative personnel, with the help of a Grounds Superintendent, where applicable.
  • Provides ongoing coaching, development, and performance feedback
  • Conducts performance evaluations and implement improvement plans where needed
  • Manages employee relations, including disciplinary actions and terminations in accordance with company policy
  • Creates and maintains staffing schedules to support operational needs
  • Fosters a culture of accountability, respect, safety, and teamwork
  • Enforces all safety protocols and OSHA standards to ensure a safe work environment
  • Conducts regular safety inspections and training sessions
  • Ensures proper handling of equipment, materials, and burial procedures
  • Maintains compliance with environmental and public health requirements

    Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licensure

    • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • 3–5+ years of management experience, preferably in cemetery, funeral services, landscaping, or facilities operations.
    • Valid state issued driver’s license in good standing and acceptable driving record. 

    Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications and Licensure

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field preferred. 

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications

    • Able to read, write and speak English fluently. Bilingual is a plus.
    • Strong experience in staff supervision, including hiring, performance management, and employee relations
    • Attend and perform work in a professional and courteous manner in accordance with the employer’s requirements.
    • Demonstrated willingness to participate in growing market share through community involvement.
    • Strong knowledge of funeral service regulations and compliance.

    • Outdoor duties may require exposure to natural elements such as inclement weather, extreme temperatures, uneven ground, dust, gas, and/or fumes.
    • Equipment used to perform the essential function of this position includes, hand-held tools and equipment, including but not limited to lawn mowers, backhoes, tampers, zero-turn mowers, shovels, picks, rakes, sledgehammers, lawn mowers, weed trimmers and sod cutters.
    • Employees in this role are regularly required to climb, sit, stand, bend, kneel, and frequently lift to 25 pounds.
    • This position may also require reaching, pushing, and pulling.
    • This position may also be exposed to chemicals and/ or blood-borne pathogens. Exposure risk is considered:  Low   

    Travel

    • This position may require up to 20% out of area and overnight travel.
    • Travel is primarily local occurring during the business day only.
